Mila was woken by loud bangs on the door of her cell. Her eyes felt heavy from her slumber. "Wake up" Said one of the guards. She swings her legs out of bed, which is only a mattress. They don't even bother giving her a blanket these days. "The doctor wants to see you in his office."
She steps up to the door putting her hands in front of her. The guards immediately cuff Mila as they open the door. Together, they guide her to the doctor's office through the boring blank white walls of the facility. The floors were a bland gray tile. The lights were bright and blinding, occasionally flickering in some areas of the lab. No one bothers to fix it.
They walk up to a black door and knock twice.
"Come in." Byers called.
One of the guards opens the door, Dr. Byers was standing of front of desk, leaning against it. Mila walked in, the door closing behind her. Her cold metal handcuffs sending chills down her spine.
Mila glared at him. "I have something for you." He said. He walked around his desk and opened a small drawer, pulling out a small blue gift box with a matching blue bow. "Happy birthday." Byers smiled, holding out the gift in front of him.
She looked at the gift and then him, hesitant.
"Go on, take it." He said.
Mila took the small gift box, rubbing the small intricate details on the box with her thumb. She undid the bow and slowly lifted the lid.
A necklace.
"You got me jewelry?" She asked, unimpressed.
"Not just any jewelry," he said. "It was your mother's."
Mila's eye twitched. Byers hit a nerve when he mentioned her mother. It was a very touchy subject for her knowing she was the reason her mother walked out on them. She pushed her away. She stopped loving her because of her abilities. She was too different.
The necklace was gold with a purple gem dangling from the chain. "Amethyst." He stated. "It was her favorite, also her birthstone."
The thought of her mother wearing this around her neck formed a lump in her throat. She wished things happened differently, because maybe if they did she'd still be in her life and she wouldn't be a guinea pig in the lab. She would have never allowed this.
Mila's hand unwillingly shook as she touched the gem with her thumb, sending a wave of electricity up her arm. She would kill to see her mother again one more time.
"I don't even remember what she looks like." Mila said, her voice broke. She wasn't going to cry. Not now. Not in front of him.
Dr. Byers smiled softly. It's been a while since she's seen him genuinely smile. "She was absolutely beautiful." Then suddenly, his smile faded into a frown. His face turned cold. "You're 18 now. You're old enough to know."
Mila raised an eyebrow. "Know what?"
He looked down at his polished dress shoes for a couple seconds, then looked back up at Mila. "Your mother is dead."
Her heart dropped. She stared at him with wide eyes. She couldn't speak. Her words were stuck in her throat. Why didn't he tell her sooner? When did she die? How did she die? Did he kill her? How long has she been dead?
"She's been dead for a decade." With every word he said, the angrier she became. Why did he keep this from her for this long?
Tears welled in her dark green eyes. Why didn't he tell me? All these years, I thought she abandoned me...
Her heart rate began to increase with her anger.
