"-minor break just below the knee."
techno's attention was already elsewhere but he practically completely forgets about the nurse at the end of his bed when his dad walks in.
his initial reaction is to sit up in excitement but he doesn't because of his knee, staying still. then seconds later, his joy seems to be quickly replaced with quite resentment. he has been wanting his dad with him since he fell on the pitch, so he's obviously very happy that he is here now but, at the same time, he's been in this hospital bed for hours now.
that's not to mention the time he spent getting scans, or the even longer time he sat in the waiting room.
their football game started right after school ended, it's dark outside now.
why did it take him so long to get here?
"oh hello, is this dad?" phil nods, shaking hands with the nurse. techno listens as the brunette man fills his dad in on what they've been up to and what they've found, concluding with, "so now we're just waiting to get a cast on and then he'll be free to go."
"how long will that take?" his dad asks.
the nurse hums in thought. "it really depends on which cast we decide on and how long it takes for everything to be ready but, to be safe, i'd say techno has to be here for at least a few more hours."
phil nods, thanking the brunette man, and the nurse dismisses himself. he claims he is going to go and check on the cast updates but techno has a feeling he's just saying that so he has an excuse to leave without seeming rude - after all, that poor man probably has a plethora of other patients he has to worry about.
phil makes his way around the bedside opposite where dream and his mum are still sitting. the blond has fallen asleep, his head supported by his mum's shoulder and his phone still resting in his lax hand from where he had been playing silly games. the older woman is wide awake, focusing intently on the regular updates and never once moving her hand from techno's side. they aren't holding hands, but the offer is clearly there.
"i'm sorry it took me so long to get here, i had to finish up at work," phil apologises, his voice so genuine. he doesn't sit down, simply leaning his hand against the back of techno's bed, smiling gently down at his son. "how are you feeling?"
techno felt guilty that dream and his mum were waiting around with him and, at one point, he'd prompted them to leave with the reminder that sapnap would need picking up from school. cara had told him that it was okay, and that dream's dad was going to take the afternoon off work to handle the young ravenette.
techno doesn't know the details of dream's dad's job, but he knows it's more important than his own father's. someone else's dad so easily used their holiday hours so techno would have company and his own dad probably didn't even try.
"i'm fine," he answers. techno hates the conflicting feelings that are burning up through him. he's sad, feeling forgotten again. he's angry, not understanding why his dad doesn't care. but then there's still a part of him that's just happy to have paternal company. he's spent all day wishing he was with his dad but now he is and it just feels... empty.
