Tommy's slumber was rudely interrupted by a persistent vibration from his phone. Groggy and disoriented, he fumbled for the device, his blurry eyes scanning the screen.
His heart skipped a beat as he realized it was a text message from Molly,It read simply:
'Good morning.'
A surge of euphoria coursed through Tommy's veins. He reread the message, each word filling him with warmth and anticipation.
Scrambling out of bed, Tommy rushed to the bathroom and splashed water on his face to clear his head. As he looked in the mirror, he noticed his disheveled appearance and winced. He needed to make a good impression.
He quickly brushed his teeth, combed his hair, and threw on a clean shirt and jeans. With his pulse still racing, he headed back to his bedroom and dialed Molly's number.
'Hello?' her voice answered, as sweet as honey.
'Molly, it's Tommy,' he said, trying to sound calm and collected. 'I just got your text.'
'Oh, hey Tommy,' she replied. 'Sorry for waking you so early.'
'It's okay,' Tommy reassured her. 'I'm just surprised. You have no idea how happy your message made me.'
They chatted for over an hour, laughing. The conversation flowed effortlessly between them.
As they said goodbye, Molly mentioned that she was going for a run at the park later that afternoon. Tommy couldn't resist asking if she'd like him to join her.
'Sure,' Molly said. 'That would be great.'
With trepidation, Tommy hung up the phone. He spent the rest of the day rehearsing what he would say and how he would act.
That afternoon, Tommy arrived at the park, his heart pounding with anticipation. He spotted Molly from afar, her long brunette hair flowing in the breeze. She was even more beautiful than he had remembered.
"Hey molly!"
"Hello"she said in a monotone voice.
"It's nice to see you again"
"Didn't you hate me literally a couple days ago?"She said while smiling
"Well yeah b-but -that's not the point!"he said scratching his neckand looking away.
"Yeah well,it's nice to see you again too now come on!"she smiled before running.
Tommy, still looking away didn't realize she ran away.
"Okay so, we should-"His head turned all around him,"Molly, seriously?"
He sprinted towards the park's edge, where the trees thinned and the world beyond seemed to beckon.
He saw a glint of red amongst the foliage. 'Molly!' he yelled again. He pushed past the branches, his breath catching in his throat.
There she was, perched on the edge of a steep drop, her face alight with wonder. She pointed towards the distant horizon, where a shimmering haze seemed to hang in the air.
'Look, Tommy!' she whispered, her voice filled with awe. 'The Golden Sea! It's real!'
Tommy's heart sank. Molly had been captivated by a mirage, an optical illusion. He knew it, yet he couldn't bear to shatter her dream.
'It's beautiful,' he managed, taking a deep breath. 'But it's really far away, isn't it?'
Molly nodded, her eyes still fixated on the mirage. 'Maybe we can find a way,' she said, her voice filled with childish optimism.
Tommy hesitated, torn between his responsibility and his desire to indulge her imagination. He knew he had to act quickly, before the illusion faded, or worse, Molly decided to try and reach it.
'Come on, Molly,' he said, taking her hand. 'Let's go something else. There's a whole other world to explore, right here.'
He gently pulled her away from the treacherous edge, leading her towards the familiar, safe world of the playground. As they walked, he pointed out the vibrant colors of the swings, the playful shadows cast by the slide.
Molly's initial disappointment faded as the magic of their shared world rekindled. She began to make jokes with him,and talk about random shit.
As they cooled down after their run, they sat on a bench beneath a towering oak tree. The sun began its descent, casting a warm glow on the surrounding scenery.
The park bench creaked undar Tommy's weight as he leaned back, a mischievous grin spreading across his face.
'Hey, Molly,' Tommy said, his voice a little too loud. 'Want to hear a joke?'
Molly sighed, reluctantly looking up. 'Tommy, you know I hate your jokes. Half the time I don't even get them.'
'But this one is good, I promise,' Tommy insisted. 'It's about a dog...'
Molly rolled her eyes, but a small smile tugged at her lips. She knew she couldn't resist Tommy's enthusiasm, especially when it came to his terrible jokes.
'So,' Tommy started, his voice dropping to a conspiratorial whisper, 'Why did the dog get a job at the library?'
Molly waited, a hint of amusement in her eyes.
Tommy leaned in, almost whispering, 'Because he was a good boy!'
Molly burst into laughter, her shoulders shaking. 'Oh, Tommy,' she gasped, wiping tears from her eyes. 'That was terrible!'
Tommy beamed, his grin wider than ever. 'I know, right? I told you it was good.Wait what?!'
They both sat back, the afternoon sun warming their faces. Molly couldn't help but glance at Tommy every few minutes, a smile still playing on her lips.
'Knock, knock,' Tommy announced, his grin already wide.
Molly sighed dramatically. 'Tommy, you just told me one.'
'But this is a different one!' Tommy insisted, his voice bubbling with excitement. 'And you'll love it.'
'Fine'
'Okay,okay, knock knock'
'Who's there?'
'Lettuce.'
'Lettuce who?'
Tommy leaned in, his eyes shining with mischievous delight. 'Lettuce in! It's cold out here.'
Molly burst into laughter, slapping her hand against her knee. 'You're terrible, Tommy!' she said, but her voice was full of affection.
'But it's funny, right?' Tommy asked, his chest puffing out with pride.
'It's... hilarious,' Molly admitted.
'You're really good at these knock knock jokes.'
'Thank you!' Tommy beamed. He fished a crumpled piece of paper from his pocket, 'My dad helped me write them down. He said I should try them out on you.'
Molly's smile softened. 'Well, I'm glad you did. Even though you're pretty cheesy.'
Tommy, unfazed, launched into another knock-knock, his voice full of confidence. 'Knock knock... '
And so, the afternoon flew by, filled with the echoes of laughter and the warmth of friendship, all thanks to a boy who loved his dad, loved to make people laugh, and loved to share his silly, wonderful jokes. They ended their evening.
'I had such a great time, Tommy,' Molly said. 'Thank you for inviting me.'
'Me too,' Tommy replied. 'I hope we can do it again sometime.'
Molly smiled. 'I'd love that.'
As they walked back to their cars, Tommy couldn't shake the feeling that something special had happened between them. That text message from Molly had not only woken him up, but had also ignited a spark of hope and possibility in his heert.
