You didn't bother to tell Jungwon where you were going, only that you had to leave and now. He didn't question you, stuffing his belongings into a leather satchel, and getting your horses ready while you paid your dues.
"I assume you found that Rabbit you were looking for?" The Old Woman asked, sliding your change back across the counter.
"Yes," You replied curtly.
"That's good," The Woman responded, a soft smile tainting her wrinkled cheeks. "Very good."
When you were ready to go, Jungwon looked at you briefly. "I assume you two had an...exchange?"
"I don't remember much of it, but yes."
"He said?"
"Find Alice. She can explain everything."
"That's all?"
"No."
He did not push, he only eyed you wearily, mounting his horse. "Okay then."
You let your heel spur the horse forward, your vision narrowed in on the trees at the end of the tired street. Your heartbeat in your ears, you breathed slowly through your nose.
And ended up right back where you began.
Confusion flared through you. "What?"
"Have you lost hope?" Jungwon's question was slow, quiet.
"No." But your heart wasn't in the word. "Have you?"
"No."
You were both lying, even a fool could see that.
"We'll just try again."
And you did. Again, and again, and again. Until you're legs ached and the sun was halfway down the sky.
"No, no, no, no, no." You dropped from your horse's back. "No. This isn't happening."
Jungwon followed you, gripping your shoulder. "Y/n, look at me." You didn't. You couldn't. "Y/n." He lifted your chin slowly. "Look. Would I have come with you if I didn't believe in you?"
"No, but-"
"But nothing," He said softly. "The situation has changed, yes. But if you don't tell me anything, I can't help you. If you don't believe in yourself, I can't believe in you either."
Your lips tremble. "I can't do it."
"Y/n, I'm insane, the definition of it. Most of this place is. But you've survived with an infinitely different mindset, and no memory, for three years. There's not much you can't do."
"Jungwon?"
"Yeah?"
"What happens if I fail?"
He smiles, embracing you tightly. "You won't. You have a dream, don't you? To leave, to live. The problem with Wonderland is no one can dream without losing themselves. We weren't made to dream. But you..." He pulled away for a moment, a charmed grin on his face. "You're different."
Your breath caught for a moment. You're heart sped up.
No. No. You couldn't. You had to leave.
But your heart betrayed you.
"Jungwon."
"Yeah?"
"What the fuck am I going to do without you?"
A short, light laugh, equivalent to the sound of bells. "You'll survive I swear."
"But what if I don't?"
