The sound of your feet roughly beating the soft ground was faint, but screamed in your head. Your head was spinning, sweat and tears mixed on the surface of your face and rolled down your cheeks. The only sound you could hear was your faint whimpering, your concerningly loud heart beat, the sound of your feet dragging the floor and the breeze brushing against your ear drums. You look up at the gloomy sky, surrounded by the tips of the pine trees around you, you close your eyes and keep running forwards. The soft path ends, a cold, iron bar struck your bare feet and you fall forwards, but as you reach out, a human body comes down with you.

Your eyes split open, a boy, wide-eyed, curly brown hair, deep brown eyes and white skin lay beneath you, trembling in fear and confusion. It took you a minute to compute what just happened, but when you realize you just knocked a boy off his feet, you jump up. You look down at him, signaling to not make a sound. You turn your head to look around, in fear that you made a loud noise, watching and listening for the creatures. The trees rustled in the light wind, the leaves on the floor occasionally blew over, and you concluded that you were safe. You notice a girl with short, brownish-blond, wavy hair holding a shot gun and a woman who you assumed to be their mother with longer dirty-blond hair and something wrapped in fabrics slinged across her chest and cradled in her arms. They both stood there, staring in shock and discombobulation at you and the boy who was still on the ground. You looked back, staring down that eerie, disturbing path you just came from. As your mind drifted further along the path, you could hear the screams of the people you just left to die. You snapped out of it and turned over to reach out to the boy, he grabbed onto your arms and you tug him forwards.

{Sorry} you motioned to him, unsure if he understood ASL. He looked at you weirdly, then quickly turning his head, looking around in a confused shock. You looked at the two females you noticed earlier and their looks of shock turned into looks of confusion.

{Where is your family?} the mother signed back, with a look of curiosity and sympathy. Your mind drifts off again at the thought, memories of your parents were scattered around your view, blocking your focus. Tears build up in your eyes as you remember more, and then you snap out of it.

{Gone.} you sign aggressively as that sickening feeling deepens in the back of your throat.

{They're all... gone}, your arms drop down to your sides in disheartenment. You look up at the mother, and she looks back at you, feeling your pain.

{Would you like to stay with us?} she signed, and your face lit up.

{I-is that ok? Are you sure?} you signed back, frantically.

{Of course!} she replied. You started to question if you were going to be a burden to them, because you don't want what happened to your previous squad to happen to them too,                all because of you.

{I have nowhere else to go... I-i have medical supplies! I know how to shoot and, uh, nurse!}

{Its alright. What's your name?} Your heart was racing, you couldn't tell if it was because you were exited, scared or thought that something would go wrong. You  just shoved the intrusive thoughts back where they came from and signed your name.

{Y/n, or N/n! Cause its easier to sign...}

{Evelyn} The mother signed.

{Im Regan!} the girl signed with confidence, and then you turned to the boy.

{It's Marcus...} You stared at him for a minute all the sound became muffled, everything was blurry, except for his face.

{A-are you ok?} Everything came into focus again, as you realized that you look like an idiot.

{Oh! Uh, y-yeah... You just... remind me of someone...} You looked deeper into his face and all you could see was... Your best friend. The screaming erupted in your head again, the guilt swallowed you whole.

{Lets get going... It'll get dark soon} Evelyn signed, turning towards the rusty fence. Regan followed behind lugging a huge backpack, Marcus picked up a basket and an amp and walked towards them, so you followed.

{Do you live here?} You signed to Marcus, walking beside him.

{No, every night we lit a bonfire and then others lit theirs, and this place is where one of them was. I don't know what's here, this was my moms idea.} You looked ahead after processing what he just said, and you watched as the mother stepped into the hole in the fence.

{What is she holding?} You ask as the group slows down.

{Baby.} Marcus answers.

{Doesn't it make noise!?} You exclaim.

{Sometimes, that's why we put it in the box-} He paused. You looked ahead and saw that Evelyn's backpack got caught on a wire from the fence. You all stood in silence as she tugged on it softly, eventually getting it off. Suspense fell onto the scene as she stepped further, one foot after the other. But then her foot got caught on something.
