CHAPTER TWO: READER'S TRAGEDYIt's been 3 months since the Valid Tragedy. That's what I all called it.. It was definitely an end for most, Almost for all. No one really knew what happened. It was almost like a cliffhanger. No one understood the pain that surged through everyone. The only people who knew what happened were me, Lil Baka, Lil Wayne, and Lil Booma.. My name is Reader. Reader Calipso. One of the few people who was there for the Valid Tragedy. The only person who started it, and the only person that is going to fix everything.
Before I had met Lil Baka, my life was normal, and boring. He really lightened everything up. He made me feel like me. Those times were the best I had ever experienced. There was one downside.. He was valid. Quite valid as well. During that time I was focused on a project to make me become valid just like Lil Baka. It was a crime to be with someone valid if you're not valid yourself. But since meeting Lil Baka, I had forgotten all about everything that was related to being Valid. Even my big project. The last night I saw him was the worst night of my life. He was going to know I wasnt valid. I was full of fear. I had to act quick. My plan wasn't ready but I had to put it into action so I wouldn't lose Lil Baka. He was the best man in my life. It all went wrong. Everything.. Wrong.. If you're reading this. I'm sorry for what I have done. I will fix everything. I will.
- Reader Calipso
P.S: Worry about tomorrow.
THE ENDReader scribbled the note as fast as she could. The bangs outside her door were getting louder than ever. Time was running out faster than she would have imagined. Her door broke down, the sirens from outside now clearer in her hearing range. She finished the note then put it in a glass bottle, sealing it off tightly with wax she had prepared before this was all about to happen. Footsteps were running around the house, coming closer to her door. "CLEAR" A man shouted, before another shouted the same. There was not enough time. She grabbed her jacket, and bag before fleeing out the window. She hopped out and glued herself to the wall. Making sure the men who were now in her room weren't going to see her out the window. Her leg stung from the fall. Reader began to shuffle her way out of the view of the law men, but it was too late. The time wasn't there, the time wasn't right. She turned the corner of the house, and never took another step. Pain fled through her stomach as liquid poured out. She looked ahead at the men with guns pointed right at her before falling down to her knees and looking at the bullet wound. The pain was too much. This was too much. Everything was too much for her. In a moment, everything went black as her head now laid against the moist, cold grass.
"Did you hear that? Hey, Colby, You heard that right?" Said a kid. He grabbed his friend's arm to grab his attention. "Yes! What do you want Lance? I'm trying to finish this.." Colby snarked at Lance as he fiddled his knife against a tree in the woods, carving out some words. Lance sighed at Colby. "Come on, let's go see what happened. Sounded like a gunshot. A gunshot and sirens are a sight to see!" He said with a smile trying to grab Colbys interest, but he wasn't budging. "We are far enough in the woods, man." Colby turned to Lance. "We aren't going deeper or we are for sure going to get lost."
"You're making a checkpoint right now. We just have to find the carving then we know our way home."
"The sirens sound so far away, Lance. I'm not going." Colby began to turn stern, like he was Lance's mother. Lance sighed in defeat. He crossed his arms over his chest and walked over to the tree and Colby began carving again. He leaned on the side of the tree, making sure he was out of Colby's way. They made eye contact with each other, passing each other's glares. Lance with his stare of disappointment, and Colbys that looks like he's saying 'Drop the idea.'
After trucking in the forest for a long time, clearing away and building a fort out of twigs, logs, and leaves, the sun was minutes away from completely disappearing. "What time is it?" Lance asked as he finished setting up the last log to their fort. "No clue. We should start going though." Colby sat up from a stump he was perched on for a while and began to walk, giving Lance no option to stay. Lanced nodded and followed Colby, looking back at the masterpiece they had spent hours on. He still wondered what that gunshot did, who it had hit, if it had hit anyone and was still a little upset Colby didn't want to go see as well. as they finally made it onto the streets of Canora, the sun had already passed. Lance worried about his mom. wondered what she was going to say to him this time. Though Colby and Lance were very close friends, not much words were passed as they walked along the empty streets. they made it to a corner past the highway. this is where they said their goodbyes until tomorrow. Lance sighed as he watched Colby walk away. Lance admired so much about Colby. He seems strong, and invincible. The type of person that would bully a bully. Lance watched Colby's brown hair wave in the frosty wind. He shoved his hands in his pockets before starting the cold journey back home, waiting for the expected, harsh, scolding from his mother.Lance wehrly stepped into his house, trying to be quiet. Though it is expected, he really didn't want to get caught. He wasn't supposed to be out this late. It's not like he meant to. He took of his shoes as quietly as possible before his mom noticed he was finally home. Harsh footsteps became louder, followed by a voice. "Lance? Is that you?" It was Lance's mother. Shockingly her voice wasn't as stern as usual. She turned the corner and looked at lance who had finished putting his jacket on the hook, and was taking off his touque. "Lance. Where were you?" Lance's mom crossed her arms over her chest as she narrowed her eyes at her son. Lance gulped slightly before speaking up. "I was hanging out with Colby. We were just- we were walking around the town. We lost track of time." A wave of silence fled through the room.
"Lance. I've told you time and time again. Valid's aren't safe at night." His mom sighed. "Get to your room. It's past your bedtime" She stared at Lance for a second shaking her head, then let back to her room. Lance was in grade 11, 17 years old. he didn't understand why he still had a bedtime. he never asked about it anyways. As soon as she left Lance's sight he let out a deep breath. He propped his touque up where his jacket was hung and began his way to his room. The floors creaked through the hallway as he walked past his mom's room to his own. He closed the door behind him and sighed. He was aware of the trouble that gets caused between Valid's and non-Valid's, but he was sick and tired of it. Colby wasn't Valid, and he was his best friend. What's so wrong about a Non Valid being friends with a Valid? Lance went to the mirror that sat on the wall of his room. He looked at himself. He looked at his blonde hair, now messy with leaves and dirt. Lance ran his fingers through his hair, ruffling it a bit trying to get the leaves and dirt out. There was also dirt on his freckled face. Lance tried to rub it off but couldn't do much since the dirt was on a bruise left by his mother. Lance took a closer look before laughing to himself since he thought the bruise was dirt. He looked into his blue eyes, thinking. Thinking about what that gunshot was and thinking what type of music he's going to play for his shower.Lance woke up to the sound of his alarm going off. It was 7:00am on a friday. Lance sat up and shut off his alarm with heavy arms. He took a second to wake up before getting ready for the day ahead of him. he put on jeans with a sweater, and a plaid coat to go with it before leaving his room and brushing his teeth. as soon as he was done he heard his mom yell at the kitchen, which was just in front of the hallway where his room, his mom's room, and the bathroom is. "Lance, come here and eat your breakfast before your dad gets here. hes driving you to school today." Lance didn't hesitate to move quickly, eating his breakfast in under 2 minutes. Lance had time to do whatever while he waited for his dad to get to his house. Lance's parents were divorced, and he usually switches houses. one week he's with his dad, and another with his mom. it can be pretty tiring for Lance but he was told he didn't have a choice so he just accepted it. Lance was drawing when his dad finally came through the door. "Hey, Nicole." Lance's dad spoke in a monotone voice. his eyes searched the room for Lance as Nicole responded. "Brad." she spoke distantly. there was obviously still some anger between the two. Lance came around the corner and greeted his dad. "Gather your stuff." Brad spoke with a small smile. Lance rushed back to his room and picked up his backpack and in a matter of no time he was in his dad's car. the ride to school was silent.
