9th November 2022. As the sun peeked through my window, I prepared for school, my heart teetering between hope and dread. Some weeks, I'd feel the tendrils of recovery wrapping around me, but then they'd unravel, leaving me back at square one. Pixie's absence was a gaping void. Her constant companionship had been my anchor, and without her, I felt adrift.
I had found solace in a trio of new friends. Though at times, being in a trio can feel isolating, the laughter and shared memories we created kept the loneliness at bay.
*School bell ringing*
The final bell chimed, a sweet release. I embarked on my journey home, the melodic strains of Billie Eilish ringing in my ears. Her music was my sanctuary, a comforting presence amidst the chaos.
Upon reaching home, my mum's voice echoed from the living room, summoning me. My mind whirled with possibilities - a casual chat, a tragic loss, or perhaps news that could tilt my world off its axis.
I settled onto the worn-out sofa, her words slicing through the silence, "Briar had to be put down, I'm sorry." The world fell mute, a deafening silence that drowned out everything else. Briar, the horse who had been my mentor, my friend. She had transformed me into the rider I am today, guiding me through my first canter, trot, and jump. And now, she was just a memory.
