He drove his car slowly, taking in the change which had taken place in his absence. There were not much. The houses were same, people were same. He was same.
The time he had spent in this place was not something he could easily forget. He had spent his childhood alone in the house which had everything anyone could ask for except the one thing he wanted the most. The lack of love he had gotten throughout his life has changed him in ways which didn't even seem to bother him any longer. It was fine; the life he was living was more than enough.
He parked the car outside a huge Victorian house; he didn't want to bring in car inside those large gates. It would feel like he wanted to be here, like he had come to stay. He has not. He would never again.
The gatekeeper opened the gate for him and flashed him a smile which he didn't return. He never did before, why change the good habit now?
His walk was stiff, mouth set in a frown as he walked the short distance to reach the front door. He rang the bell- it brought a sickly smile on his face. He was a man who was ringing the bell of his own fucking house. The small stab the thought brought was ignored as always. The door was opened by his old governess. She smiled widely when she saw it was him and hugged him. He hugged her back and took a deep breath. She still smelled like homemade chocolate cake.
She was the only person in this house he had bothered being polite with, not even his sister was that close with him. This woman has raised him and taught him so much of the world he knew now.
"My boy, I missed you." Cora said softly.
He leaned back and stared at her wet eyes, wrinkled face and white hair and kissed her cheek and whispered, "So have I, Ma."
Cora kissed his head and told him to go meet his parents. He didn't miss her pleading eyes which always begged him to be nice with them. And he always promises himself that he won't but he still ended up listening to her.
He walked towards the back of the house. He was almost dragging his legs, trying to stop the time somehow but he knew, the sooner he get this over with, the sooner he will be able to escape. He couldn't breathe already. What was the point of staying away for so long just to return willingly in his cage?
When he stepped out in the poolside, he found himself in another world yet again. His mother was on the phone as always. Her Gucci dress would have suited her if she was fifteen years younger. He knew she was still trying to grab hold of the little youth she no longer had and God, she was trying hard. His sister was sitting with her friends, probably discussing the upcoming wedding and his father was on his laptop as always.
Only his sister reacted when he appeared in their sight. She hugged him and told him that she had missed him. He didn't say anything just hugged her back. Words of congratulations escaped his mouth in an empty happiness- it was a business marriage, no need to be that happy. He didn't have a bad relationship with his sister; it was just that he didn't have any relationship with her. She was just someone he knew as his older sister, someone who shared the same surname and parents.
His father nodded at him and then went back to his laptop; his mother blew him a kiss, otherwise seemed uncaring. Almost four years of his absence had made no difference in his parent's lives.
He thought he would be thankful that it went quick but yet a sharp knife dug into his chest. To think after always being treated like that had made him a little stronger. He wanted to laugh on himself.
He brushed it off and without saying a word, turned to get the hell out of there.
In his thoughts, he didn't even notice the figure which was coming towards him with full force until it ran into him.
He was strong enough to be nothing more then surprised with it but that could not be said about the figure which ran into him. He looked down and he knew time stopped. He was suddenly looking right at live electricity if there was such a thing but that was all he could think to describe such beautiful blue eyes. They were like clear dark water. He was frozen for only few seconds, watching her eyes flash emotions which confused him and almost suddenly they were gone so fast, fast enough for him to doubt what he had seen. A grin had taken over the illusion he had seen and he was yet again, taken by surprise. Time started moving again. His walls were back up.
"I'm so sorry; I wasn't looking where I was going." She said sheepishly while picking herself up and brushing her clothes.
His eyes were staring at hers in curiosity. He was shocked by the life in them; there was brightness in them in which they were dancing. They were so alive that he almost felt like he was looking at the sun. It was blinding.
Without a word, he walked away before he would lose his temper. He wasn't a fan of happy people. Mostly because he envied them but he wasn't going to blame it on his own horrible life.
But he couldn't help it. He looked back one last time and found her in the same spot but this time she was turned and he couldn't see anything but the straight light brown hair. The sun was making them appeared gold. She seemed to be staring at the antique piece on the table, he wasn't sure.
He turned back and starts walking again. He shook his head and frowned. He didn't get to see her face. Wait, he did get the chance but her eyes, there was something about them. He had no time to notice her face, he was too busy gawking at her eyes which had left a different feeling in the pit of his stomach.
He met Cora on his way and controlled the urge to ask about the girl but it seemed like he didn't needed to.
"Have you seen Nia?" Cora asked.
"Nia....?"
"Oh, my apologies. Beautiful girl, brown hair, blue eyes, probably had ran into something?"
He couldn't help when his lips twitched slightly.
"Yes, last I saw her; she was standing before the Japanese antique piece in the hall."
"Oh no, I need to see if she had not broken something. I swear, if she broke one more thing, your mother will lose it." With that Cora raced towards the poolside.
Mother losing it? He wondered why and couldn't help but shake his head in amusement. At least there will be some source of entertainment here.
He had no need to visit his room for when he moved out, he had decided to break every tie with this house. Remembering to not leave anything behind which might give him a reason to come back in this house but karma seemed to hate him for no reason what so ever.
His life lived here wasn't the only reason he didn't wanted to come back. Another thing had made him running away from this place and he was so very afraid it would happen. The urge to go back once again made its way to his mind but he knew he couldn't run. How long will he run?
And it was not like he had someone he needed to fear for.
