Mayas phone blared with the awful default alarm. It was 5 am and today was one she had been dreading. It was the day she was returning to school. As much as she wished for just rot in her bed she knew she couldn't. She sat up with groan as her second alarm went off.

Maya felt dull the entire time she got ready. Suddenly every time she glanced in the mirror she saw everything she hated. Every flaw, all the exhaustion and grief seemed to show on her face. She decided half through putting makeup on that it was pointless. Washing her face back to the same tired look she'd been carrying around for weeks.

Like she had done several done before she stood on the curve waiting for the janky school bus that always let out a loud squeal every time the break was hit. It didn't feel right anymore. Maya normally put some effort into her outfits but today it was just a hoodie and jeans. It would stay like this for a while.

Maya had been so distracted and distant she didn't even think of her friends. Walking onto the bus she saw a boy with dirty blonde hair smiling at her from the back of the bus. "Aye, look who's back! Where the hell have you cry been? Ethan Gallagher said loudly with a goofy grin. Even though it was like 7am but he always seemed to be extremely energetic in the morning. For the first time in a while a hint of a smile showed on her face as she sat into her seat.

Across from her seat was Cassandra Nelson, who seemed dead asleep. Her curly black hair was half hidden under a bandana. Somehow she always managed to look amazing no matter what hair style. Braids, straight hair, messy bun, literally everything looked amazing on her. Her sleep was interrupted by a smack on the side of her head from the blonde boy sat behind her "The hell?-" she began sitting up opening her eyes. "Maya you're back! Did you catch Covid or something you've been gone for like ever dude." She said greeting her best friend since the third grade.

Maya just shook her head "Yeah I've been sick for a bit. Did I miss anything important at hell?" She replied with a lie. Somehow she had managed to keep her father's death very quiet. It was easier to pretend when she was actually around people who made her happy. "Not really just the same stuff but you probably have a shit tone of make up work." Ethan replied peaking over the seat.

The three had known each other for most of their lives but only really became good friends in the last few years. Ethan being the most recent person to join the small group of friends mostly due to the fact that he shared a lot of classes with them. Compared to the girls he was a talker but luckily Maya was listener.

"Ethan shhh I'm trying to sleep." Cassie said half jokingly. "We are going to pull up to school in like 20 minutes." He said looking out the window judging cars as they drove by. "That's 20 minutes of sleep I could catch up on" "Just go to sleep at a decent time at night dumbass" "how about... no" She leaned her head back on her backpack tiredly.

Maya couldn't help but smirk at the two. Cassie and Ethan have always been polar opposites of each other yet fit so well together. The one thing they had in common though was how much they talked. It was fun to listen to the odd conversations between the two.

The day seemed so slow yet fast. Her first block in Gym flew by because all she did was walk laps around the football field and listen to music. Her second block history was dreadful due to she had a mountain of make up work in it and a shit tone of notes to catch up on. The teacher kept throwing a little look of concern at her during the lesson. Maya did everything in her power to avoid eye contact until lunch. She dipped as soon as the bell rang.

She shared 3rd block and 4th block with Ethan. It was like a short breath of fresh air until she was reminded of how much work she had to do. Normally she was a focused student and that maintained a A-B average but now that her grades all were dropping due to her absence. She just didn't seem to care anymore. Ethan clearly noticed something was off but she changed the subject every time he brought it up. They texted in the group chat for the majority of both classes.
