"hey! where were you two- you've been gone for ages! yuji's already been to three different stores and wasted like two hundred dollars," mai grabbed my arm as i walked up to her, sucking on a boba ball.
i hummed and sent her a sideways look as she went on. after a moment of pretending to listen, i risked turning around to look at the rest of the group, who were sprawled out on a bench near to us.
megumi and yuji were sitting on either side of it while nobara was spread out with her feet on megumi's lap and her head against yuji's shoulder, where she leaned on him with several shopping bags of her own on the ground around them.
maki was sat on the arm of the bench that megumi leaned against, chatting with choso who stood across from the group on the bench, pointing down at the bags that were sprawled by his feet.
"what did you two talk about?" mai's voice suddenly brought me back. i turned to her and shook my head, reaching into my bag for some chapstick.
"nothing; he brought our boba and he didn't say a word to me while we waited. and on our way back, he kinda just walked behind me the whole time. nothing interesting happened, mai," i said honestly, tapping the tube of gloss against my cheek as i glanced back at the group.
they were all standing and gathering bags to continue on, choso reaching down to lift his younger brother onto his feet and offer nobara his hand. megumi looked up at maki and she laughed and slapped the back of his head as walked away.
"ugh, lame. come on, (y/n). how are you ever gonna get him to notice you if you don't put yourself out there?" mai whined, shaking her head. as my phone went off with a notification from social media, she suddenly perked up and gave me a grinch grin.
"why don't you ask him out?" she demanded and i looked at her in disbelief.
"i thought we just had a thirty minute talk over why that's a bad idea, mai." before i could continue, she waved her hand and shook her head so i would quiet down.
"no, no. ask for his number! everyone has it except for you at this point- granted nobody ever uses it unless we need a ride somewhere- but it's a good start! it's a subtle way to say that you like him without telling him that you like him. plus, with how clueless choso is, he won't even know until you straight out-tell him, (y/n). not trying to scare you, but when it comes to that absolute himbo, you might need to just tell him to his face," mai finished, giving me a sympathetic look.
"who's a himbo? is it the same guy from earlier?" nobara asked as she came up beside the two of us, yuji racing ahead as he noticed something he liked in a display window. choso subtly jogged forward to keep pace with his energetic younger brother as maki wandered into the athletic store next door.
"yes," mai said, elbowing me. i rubbed my side and gave her a look.
"so, is anyone gonna tell me what this is about? i hate being left out, you know," nobara said, pocketing her phone and giving us her full attention. it seemed as if megumi did too as he trailed behind us, arms full with his friend's shopping bags.
well, it's not like he had anything else to do.
"okay, but you can't tell anyone- you either megumi!" i said, talking to him over my shoulder. he glanced at me from where he'd been looking at something else. he just shrugged and looked away again. i sighed.
"okay, fine. i have a little crush on choso," nobara started giggling and i'm pretty sure megumi did too before he hid his face behind one of his friend's bags.
"what the hell, guys?" i complained, turning around to look at them.
"nothing, nothing! i promise. it's just that-"
