The next day, Kailani sat next to John B's medical bed, while the boy laid unconscious. After the night they had, both teens were exhausted. John B had woken up earlier that morning, but he was too exhausted that he fell back asleep only moments later. It was now noon, and Kailani had just finished talking to Ward and Robert when she was told that John B had the possibility of waking up soon.
His eyes slowly opened before closing because of the bright lights in the hospital room. John B finally fully opened his eyes, and he was met with Kailani smiling, "Hi," Kailani whispered softly, moving her hand forward to grab his hand.
"Hi," John B said, his voice husky, "Where am I?"
"St. Olive's," Kailani told him softly, and his eyes slightly widened, "You fell from the Hawk's Nest. You have a concussion and a broken wrist."
John B lifted his arm to see his new cast, while a PA was talking outside the door, "Whoa."
"Pretty cool."
John B's eyes widened in nervousness, "I need to get outta here. DCS is gonna find me-" John B began getting up with a groan, and Kailani stood up to stop him.
Ward then walked in, "Hang on there, kid. Hang on," John B sighed as he laid back down, and Kailani sat on his bed, "Kailani told me everything. About your little adventure, about you running from the DCS, about how you were protecting Sarah in the tower. John, I believe I owe you an apology. You were honest with me, about a small indiscretion, and I went ahead and fired you anyway. And I shouldn't have. Unfortunately, from time to time, I have a bit of a... short fuse. Ask her."
"It's true," Kailani said softly and with a smirk.
"I'd like to make up for it, if you'll let me. I spoke with Sheriff Peterkin, and... I've offered to be you and your sister's legal guardian, if you'll have me. Your sister will agree if you agree."
John B chuckled in shock, "What?"
"It'd mean a roof over your head and no more runnin' from the DCS."
John B chuckled, and he looked over to Kailani who was smiling with him, and he sighed, "Sure, yeah. Uh..." Ward chuckled, "...sounds good."
"Okay, then, it's settled," Ward said, patting John B one the shoulder, and the boy chuckled softly, "Welcome to the family."
Ward walked out with a chuckle, and Kailani smiled and she stood up to leave the room, but he grabbed her hand, "Hey," John B called lightly. Kailani turned back to him and sat back down, "I'm sorry," Kailani sent him a confused look, "About denying... us, getting Sarah Cameron involved, everything."
Kailani smiled softly and looked down, "I can forgive about the first thing, even though it was hard. But I don't think I can forgive you for involving Sarah. I get you needed the map, but there are other ways," Kailani bit her lip before speaking up again, "The reason I was most anger is because, once I stopped being friends with Sarah, she was dating Topper. So, I got insecure, and that's why I changed myself. Like, she dyed her hair blonde once we stopped being friends, and so I thought I had to dye my hair in order for boys to like me," Kailani said, and tears began to form in her eyes, and John B squeezed her hand, "That's why I was angry. Because when you involved her, I thought it was gonna be the Topper thing all over again, so I'm sorry, but I can't fully forgive you right now."
