It was already dark outside. There were two police cars in a line of cars in the parking lot in front of the apartment building. However, the cars were not marked. Incognito.
"Do you see anyone?" asked a voice from the police radio.
Mark lifted it to his ear. "Not yet." He and Samantha were sitting in the car in front of the entrance of the apartment complex, carefully watching every movement in the area.
The second car was parked not far away, with Katy and Chase sitting in it.
"What happened to your hands?" Mark broke the silence in the car, his eyes wandering over Samantha's bandaged wrists.
"Look over there," she interrupted him and pointed with her hand at a man covered in a white sweatshirt who had just entered the apartment.
"That'll be him," Mark decided.
They got out of the car, Mark motioned for Katy and Chase to wait outside. He and Samantha went up to the first floor and knocked on the door.
A woman in a bathrobe opened the door with a sour expression. "Good evening, Mrs. Fisher, we would like to speak with your visitor," Mark leaned against the door frame and tried to sneak a peek over the woman's shoulder into the apartment.
"I'm alone," she lied, with her eyes down at her bare feet.
"You also drink the wine on the table from two glasses yourself," Mark grinned at her.
"Do you have permission to inspect the apartment? If not, then you have no right to barge in on me," she threw a stern and determined expression at him.
"Ma'am, knowingly obstructing an investigation and lying to members of the police is against the law," Samantha explained to her.
In the background they heard a soft creak. Mark grabbed Samantha by the shoulder and pushed her away from the door. "Thank you Mrs. Fisher for your time, have a nice evening," he smiled at the unpleasant woman with his white teeth and turned to leave.
"What was it supposed to be?" Samantha snapped at him on the way out of the apartment complex.
"Wait," he winked at her mysteriously. However, when he opened the door for her, she noticed colleagues Katy and Chase leading the stranger to the police car.
"He jumped out the window?" she laughed at the idea of a half-naked man jumping out of the window. She turned her gaze to Mark. "How did you know?"
"I saw a shadow coming out of the kitchen approaching the window," he clarified, "the first floor is not high, any lover would jump out in case of danger."
"I see you have experience with this," she raised an inquiring eyebrow.
"No, it's just... you know... we've already had several similar cases." He tried to explain, but Samantha stopped listening to him.
Kate loaded the man into the car. She turned her gaze to her colleagues. "Good job," she said directly to Samantha, smiling and getting into Chase's car. He started it up and they headed for the main road.
Mark and Samantha followed suit, got into the car and Mark started up. Before they set off, he turned his face to Samantha. "What about the bandages on your wrist?" He returned to the previous topic.
"So that I don't scratch myself," she decided to answer honestly. However, she hoped that he would not have any further questions for her.
"It must be a pretty strong scratch if you have to prevent it with bandages," he gave a voice to his thoughts, not accusingly but surprised.
