MONTHS WENT BY, and still, they remained confined in their cell. Until one bright Sunday morning, the twin with the right-crooked nose appeared, unlocking the door. Mizuki rose from her seat on the cold wooden floor, a hopeful glint in her eye as she looked at him expectantly. Jake followed suit, standing right behind her, his presence a steadying force.
'There is someone who wishes to see you,' the twin said.
Mizuki glanced back at Jake before following the twin out into the sunlit world. It had been days since they had felt the direct warmth of the sun. The small window in their cell provided far too little sunshine. As she stepped outside, she had to squint, her eye adjusting to the brilliant light. She craned her neck to take in the cocktail-blue sky, a few wisps of clouds painting the azure expanse.
When she finally tore her gaze from the heavens, she was met with a familiar sight, one that stirred a mix of emotions within her.
Atop a horse he sat, her husband. Luke was here. He was dressed in a velvety long coat, richly embroidered with wide cuffs and large decorative buttons. His attire spoke of wealth and status, with breeches, a waistcoat, and a linen shirt adorned with large cuffs completing his ensemble.
