Deep within the mindscape, a thick forest is cloaked by the black of night. The only sound to be heard is the rustling of the brush as the cold wind blows through them, and the tall barren trees who's claw-like branches are only illuminated by the light of a bright yellow moon. Virgil looked up at the sky as ominous clouds loomed overhead, slowly swirling into formation above where he stood. The weight of the situation anchored in his chest. He knew he had to get away, but he hadn't been able to move for about an hour. He stood atop a large, wooden platform in the center of a clearing. A tall wooden pole protrudes from it where his wrists have been tightly bound behind his back. Every once in awhile he would attempt to struggle against the ropes, but to no avail. Inches from him, Janus stood with cane in hand, observing him with an air of smugness. The hour of the ritual was drawing near, and with each second that passed, his anticipation grew.
"You know, Virgil, I'm only doing this for your own good."
Janus stepped closer to him.
"I mean, you know that this..." Janus gestures to Virgil's clothes, "isn't really you, right?"
Virgil didn't respond, instead looking down at his feet.
"Still giving the silent treatment, huh, Virge? Well, that's alright. It won't matter soon."
Janus turns his back to Virgil, who continues to stay silent.
"To think you used to be the perfect embodiment of Thomas's greatest fears. When you started to leave more and more, I thought that his anxiety was just getting stronger. But then, you'd come back and I'd catch you smiling and singing to yourself, and then next thing I know, you're wearing," He shutters, "purple."
Virgil looks up at him with his eyes, still keeping his head low.
"I never knew what you saw in them. Patton is a clueless, naive simpleton, Logan is an overbearing know-it-all..." Janus pauses for a second, "and Roman-"
"Don't."
Janus turns back around to face Virgil, who is now angrily glaring at him, and grins.
"Uh oh... did I strike a nerve, Virge? So protective of him, and yet, he wasn't able to protect you."
Virgil's glare intensifies.
"How else would I have been able to snatch you so easily without anyone noticing?"
"You were only able to take me because you and Remus caught me off guard."
Janus chuckles. "Oh yes...", he says sarcastically, "How's your head?"
Virgil can still feel the back of his head throbbing from Remus's morning star, only making him angrier.
"You think that you can just make me evil again with some stupid ritual? Even if you could, the others would just revert me back to my normal self again."
Janus laughed. "Oh, Virgil, did you honestly think that I'd be so careless? Once the ritual is complete, you won't have the desire to."
Virgil narrowed his brows at him. "What are you talking about?"
Janus walked towards Virgil, stepping onto the wooden platform. "You're mind is going to be completely reset to it's original state. It'll be like you never even met them. You won't even be able to remember their names."
Janus walks closer to Virgil until he's inches away from his face.
"And all those conversations, those frivolous little memories with them will be..." Janus snaps his fingers, "gone."
Virgil's eyes widen in horror and he slowly shakes his head.
"But just to be safe..." Janus grabs Virgil's chin, "I'll be sure not to make the mistake of letting you out of my sight. Perhaps I'll lock you up in that room of yours, not like you leave it anyway."
Janus turns to walks away from Virgil, who's now hyperventilating in shock and desperately tugging at his ropes.
"No... you can't! You can't make me! I don't want to be like you!"
Janus rolls his eyes. "Oh, come now, Virgil, enough with the theatrics. This is how it's supposed to be."
"The others, they're looking for me! They won't let this happen. Roman, he'll-
Janus whips his head around. "He'll what!?"
Virgil is taken aback by his sudden outburst and shrinks into himself.
Janus breaths heavily before quickly regaining his composure. "He'll what, Virgil?"
Janus's demeanor suddenly becomes much scarier.
"Sing you a song? Write you a poem? Put flowers in you hair while he holds you close and kisses you and tells you how he'd die without you?"
Virgil looks at him in disbelief. "H-how did you-"
"I know what he means to you, Virgil. Even I can't deceive myself into believing otherwise. I see the way you look at him, the way your eyes light up when you hear his voice. I know... you're in love with him."
Janus let's out a deep sigh. "But not for long. Soon, you'll be as good as new, and whatever meaningless little fling you two had will be nothing more than a dream." Janus turns to walk away once more, observing the shifting sky.
Virgil's eyeliner becomes darker as tears begin to stream down his cheeks. "You're a monster."
Janus turns his head to Virgil one more time. "It takes one... to know one." Janus laughs as he walks away, leaving Virgil alone in the darkness.
Virgil looks up again at the sky, the clouds are now even darker then before. He makes one last attempt to pull against the ropes, using all his remaining strength, but it's no use. Now on the brink of losing all hope, Virgil lets himself slowly sink down onto the floor of the platform. Once sitting, his closes his eyes, sobbing softly as the bitter wind blows through his hair.
