"if this place is a bust, i'm going home." you said with a sigh.
this was the third club you were going to that night. after the first two were complete flops, you were about to give up, go home, and go to sleep.
you had finished your last class of the semester just a few hours earlier, and all you wanted to do was celebrate making it through your year of school in japan. you met new friends and made a lot of memories, and you wanted to continue the good energy through your last few weeks in japan.
"we both know that's a lie. you're going to stay out until you're drunk or want to fuck." your friend emma replied.
a surprised laugh escaped your chest as your head snapped towards her.
she was applying lipstick using the compact mirror in her purse. seeing you look at her out of the corner of her honey colored eyes, she gave you a knowing look that made you laugh some more before turning her attention to her mirror again.
"you know i'm right. besides, draken knows the owner so we can get in for free." she added.
"and how does he know owner?" you wondered.
"hmm..." emma paused to think. "i think he was in the same gang as him at some point."
you hummed in acknowledgement.
you had met emma early into your stay in japan. actually, you had met one of her friends first through the university you attended, but within 15 minutes of emma you knew you would be best friends.
at first, you were intimidated by the fact her long-term boyfriend had been in a gang, but after meeting him you realized he was a really good guy, and the people he was associated with weren't necessarily bad people. most of them just had certain life circumstances that led them to that place, not that they intentionally wanted to hurt anyone.
"if i'm picturing the right guy, it should be a pretty good time. he threw good parties when we were younger." emma said, pulling you from your thoughts.
"hopefully he doesn't own the other places we were at tonight." you joked.
"i doubt it. it's been so long since i've seen them though. all i can think of is his ugly ass braids." she said, scrunching her nose as she remembered them.
"...braids?" you asked in a confused voice, waiting for her to continue.
"yeah. he always braided his hair into two braids." she said, putting away her lipstick and setting it with some gloss. "but the couple times i saw him with his hair down... he was pretty fine."
"damn. it sucks he probably won't be here tonight." you let out, wishing that you could see him for yourself.
"it's okay. he seemed like the player type anyway." she assured you.
before you had a chance to ask why she thought that, it was your turn to enter the club.
emma gave you a look telling you she'd handle it, as she almost always did.
"hi. we're friends of the haitani brothers." she explained.
brothers?
you thought she was talking about a singular person, but maybe there was two of them?
but emma's line didn't seem to work as the bouncer stared back at her unconvinced. clearly people must have tried to use that to get in by saying that all the time.
it didn't matter though.
you knew emma had her trump card.
she passed him her ID, adding, "i'm emma sano."
