ending: see you later

"are you excited to see your family?" ran asked as you stared out his car window. his left hand rested on your thigh, giving you reassuring rubs or squeezes every once in a while.

"sure. it's been a while." you replied, your voice anything but enthusiastic. "although i'm just dreading the entire flight back."

"hey." ran called softly, making you turn to look at him.

"hmm?" you hummed in question.

"you can just say you don't want to leave me." he teased.

"stoopppppp." you groaned, and ran let out a chuckle in response.

there was a beat of silence before you spoke again.

"i will miss you." you added quietly.

ran glanced over at you in surprise, but you were already looking out the window again. so he gave your leg a reassuring squeeze, stroking his thumb against your thigh.

"i'll miss you too." he said back.

you sat in a comfortable silence for a couple minutes until he pulled up to the airport, parking at the curb in the departures area.

ran was also driving a different car today. of course, it was still a luxury vehicle, but it was something more practical from what he usually drove.

he unbuckled his seatbelt, popped the trunk and started to get out.

you took a deep breath, not wanting to display any sort of nervousness or anxiety about the situation.

although you knew it was going to happen all along, it still hurt to part ways. the past few weeks had been nothing short of amazing. going to dinners, clubbing together, staying the night at his place, getting to know his brother, rindou, a little bit more... it all felt so natural. it was an ease that was hard to come by and felt even worse leaving behind.

things probably wouldn't be the same after this.

the future was uncertain. you were going back home for a couple days before heading to your internship, and right after that ended you would start school again. there wouldn't be a lot of down time for you in general, let alone getting to go visit ran or vice versa.

you had discussed seeing each other a couple of times, but you hadn't made any plans. still, you felt confident it would happen. you just hoped things would feel the same, or at least similar, when you saw him again.

but for today, you also didn't want to put a damper on things. the lasting impression you wanted to leave was the person you were when you were with him, not the nervous or insecure girl you felt like at the moment.

and while things had been exclusive between you during your time together, it's not like you could justify being in a relationship right now. it would be months (if not years) before you saw him again. the only thing worse than things not working out was if things ended poorly.

you knew ran was the right person. you just didn't have enough time together, so you would just have to see how things went from there.

after another second of hyping yourself up, you got out of the car and walked around to the trunk where ran was lifting it and grabbing your suitcases. you started reaching into the trunk to help, but he stopped you.

"let me." he said, and you stood up right again, giving him a small smile.

once all your luggage was unloaded from the car, he slowly closed the trunk. you both knew these were your last moments together, but neither of you wanted it to end.

"thank you for seeing me off." you started, unsure of what to say otherwise.

"it's no problem. are you sure you don't want me to come in?"
