The roar of hungry teenagers echoed around the lunchroom as Ember,Saphera and I found a seat and sat down. Ember grinned and stared at us"who wants to pee their pants?" she questioned, grinning. Saphera and I, used to her extravagant behaviour simply looked at her with raised eyebrows. "I got us all tickets to" she paused for effect "the Asylum". She pulled three tickets from her pocket and threw them on the table. Saphera picked one up and studied it in awe "no way" she said disbelievingly. I however continued to look confused "you got us tickets to what now?". Ember smirked at me condescendingly "Are you serious Evie?". "says the girl who thought that dodo birds were fictional" I retorted "and don't call me Evie".
Saphera intervened "the Asylum is the scariest haunted house in the whole country you have to sign a waiver just to get in the door". Saphera and Ember chatted excitedly making plans as I distractedly picked at my tasteless mashed potatoes on my plastic fork. "hey, hannah!" Ember interrupted my brooding. "are you free next Friday?". I nodded wordlessly "yessssss" she exclaimed stretching out the word. I turned my attention back to my lunch as knot of anxiety began to form in the pit of my stomach.
Friday, April 26th 5:30 P.M.
I was laying face down on my bed dreading what would take place in half an hour, Ember and Saphera would pick me up and we would go to the asylum. I loathed haunted houses, I had ever since I had gotten separated from my parents in one for two hours when I was three. For some reason that still eluded me I had said yes to Ember when she turned up with tickets to one. Suddenly I came to a resolve if I was going to a haunted house I was going prepared.
For the next half an hour I stuffed anything and everything that could be needed from flashlights to my Mp3 to a sewing kit, anything that could help me survive this ordealall into my camo backpack. I even wore a fluorescent orange hoodie and running shoes as a precaution. I stopped in front of the mirror and studied my short, chubby build and freckled face and blue eyes and frowned. I had seen enough horror movies to know that between me Ember and Saphera I would die first. A loud, drawn out honk, as if someone was holding down the horn sounded from outside my window catching my attention. I looked out and saw Ember stopped in the middle of the road in her massive red pick up truck with rock music blaring out the open windows. I slung my loaded backpack onto my shoulders and ran outside.
Saphera threw open the passenger side door and scooted closer to Ember I threw my backpack in the back seat and sat next to her. "going camping?" Ember questioned with a nod toward my bag. "maybe" I replied "I would ask you the same but judging by your outfit you're not going anywhere outdoors". I looked over her blue jean cut-off shorts that were barely longer than her baggy black hoodie and her knee high boots, that looked miliatary well except for the heels, her purple and black hair loosely curled. Saphera joined the conversation "yeah, I was wondering about that how exactly do you expect to escape from a zombie if you can't even run?".
Ember shrugged "I look FAB thank you, besides I would just have to push Hannah at the monsters and run away" she giggled and pulled onto the freeway. "I'm offended" I gasped jokingly and playfully leaned over Saphera and shoved Ember's shoulder. "hey" she shouted "don't hit the driver Evie" she then leaned over Saphera and shoved me back. For the next fifteen minutes giggling and shoving ensued between me and Ember which Saphera ,unfortunately, was caught in the middle of. "alright, alright!" Saphera shoved the both of us "you, two knock it off or I swear to Hellery I will self destruct!". "yes mom" Ember and I replied in unison. After another half an hour of laughing singing and talking we reached exit 123. "we're heeere" Saphera said ominously. "that's it you're walking next to Eve" Ember replied. We drove down a wide, well lit road with businesses on either side, but what caught all of our attention was the building at the end of the street. it was rectangle shaped, and made out of dingy gray brick small, darkened, barred windows placed evenly on the creepy building. "that's the place I affirmed seeing the sign that said "Haunted Asylum" and had an arrow pointing towards the building. Saphera rolled her eyes "ya think" she said sarcastically.
Ember pulled to the side of the road and we all filed out of the car. "everyone ready?" Saphera asked. I simply shrugged, a feeling of uneasiness building in my stomach. Ember albowed me lightly "what's wrong Evie, are you scared?" she taunted. I rolled my eyes and forced a smile "only of you" I replied. Not seeing the point in delaying the inevitable I started walking "let's go" "this is gonna be so awesome" Ember enthused. I silently disagreed with her. We all came to a low wrought iron fence that surrounded the building. I opened it slowly and we stepped inside. Ember and Saphera walked ahead of me as I looked back towards Madis ruck and the busy street. A haunted house couldn't be that bad could It? I took a deep breath and pushed the gate closed how bad could a haunted house be? I followed after Ember and Saphera with no idea what was in store for us
