The next day, Ingrid stayed in bed longer than she usually did.  her mind clouded by glory and reality. She pondered about the existence of Valhalla and whether she was worthy of such an honor.  She remembered her father telling her of the time his father died with honor during a battle in the north.

She too dreamt of dying in a battle with honor, but she hadn't been able to fight recently because of her injury during the raid at Stavanger.  Later, a servant of the royal family went to wake up the lethargic Ingrid. Much to her frustration, she threw her mead cup to the wall which prompted Eric to force her to get up.   "Are you all right?" asked Sven. " I have just been preoccupied......" Ingrid responded.  " Do you want to talk about it?" asked Sven. Ingrid shrugged.

Her parents noticed her absent-minded face as she hadn't touched her succulent pig and freshly brewed mead.  " Are you ok, darling?" asked Olga.  Eric barged in, " You better be all right! We are going to start training soon, so you better be ready!" Ingrid smashed her cup on the table and left the longhouse for a walk.  Sven tried to stop her, but Eric forced him to stay and finish his breakfast.

she strolled for some time until she heard sounds of a horse galloping at a fast speed.  A messenger riding a thoroughbred approached Ingrid. " Where is the chief of this town? I need to speak to him immediately!"

Ingrid shouted to her dad. Eric stood up and bolted out of the longhouse. " What happened? Did you hurt Ingrid?!" asked Eric. Ingrid responded, " No, he didn't hurt me. He is a messenger from the North." " Yes, she is right. I bring a private correspondence from King Harald. he has written to all the kingdoms in Norway asking for them to pledge their kingdoms to him." said the messenger. Ingrid's face dropped in disbelief.  " What absurdity? We will never bend down to king Harald! I have fought too hard for this reputation." shouted Eric.  the messenger but not before telling Eric that he had three days to respond. If he didn't respond, Harald would take his kingdom by force.  Eric crunched the letter in anger. Ingrid comforted him and told him it will be all right.

Eric took Ingrid inside the longhouse to have a discussion about what they were going to do.....
