Prologue (1 Year and 8 months before I stood up to my father.)

"HEATHER!"
"WTF IS GOING ON! WHY WOULD YOU CALL ME A SLUT?"
"BECAUSE HE... PROVOKED ME!"
Ethan stands there, his arms crossed, watching his best friend Aidan and me.
What is he thinking?
You can't cry right now - Ethan's your enemy, he'll use it against you in the future, I tell myself.
"Heather, I love you. You know that! Why are you making such a big deal out of this? It's not like I betrayed you..."
Ethan sighs and shakes his head in the distance.
I stare at Aidan like I've seen him clearly for the first time ever.
" 'YOU DIDN'T BETRAY ME'? Yeah...
I don't think I know you anymore, Aidan."
And I run away.

"SHE'S A RUNNER, SHE'S A TRACKSTAR, SHE GON' RUN AWAY, WHEN IT GETS HARD, SHE CAN'T TAKE THE PAIN, SHE CAN'T GET SCARED."
Why the fuck am I crying?
What's wrong with me and my life?
I freeze.
Someone is watching me, I can feel their eyes on me.
I stop crying and turn off the song.
I expected to see Aidan.
No. It's Ethan.
He doesn't say anything at all.
He just watches me.
"I see. Are you Jacob Black now or are you a sick stalker?!"
He smiles.
"None of the mentioned. Get up."
"Why?"
"You're sitting on my throne. Move. You have your own throne. MOVE."
I don't do anything.
I stare him down.
But he stares back.
I stare.
He glares.
"Listen. Please. Right now, you're not the apex predator you usually are. Heather, please."
I sigh.
Then I do as he says.
"So... you and Aidan don't work."
"I guess not."
"It's the wrong thing to say, but I knew that."
"Why?" I ask him.
Confused and curious in equal measure.
"Because he's not like you.
You're Fire. He's Water. He may calm you down eventually, but in the end you'll set him on fire. He's not strong enough to help you when you're upset."
"No." I reply.
He sighs.
"No what?"
"No, I'm not going to date you after I just broke up with your best friend."
"May be for the best."
I stare at him.
"I'm an air sign - I MIGHT MAKE YOU ANGRY."
He's staring me down again.
I do the same.
"Yeah, I see I'm sitting on your throne, Heather. See you around."
Ethan leaves.
