I could do nothing but watch as the final person, none other than my best friend, was captured by the zombies. "NO!" I cried, as the zombies all cheered, and started sprinting after me. There was only one thing to do now- run for my life.
Zombies? In a school yard?? It all started with us playing the infamous "Game of Zombies" in the playground. My six year old self had not been very original, and had taken a lot of inspiration from the "Game of Thrones". The name stuck, and I found myself playing the game several years later, along with my friends. I was winning - my finger on the disconnected (or so I thought!) switch in the PT Room. Only this time, instead of boos, I heard a loud BOOOOM, in the middle of the playground.
We ran towards the playground, only to be met by more than 50 ugly, humanlike creatures, eyes wide open, dressed in rags. We backed away, all thoughts of the game forgotten as the creatures started chanting gibberish. Were these really.. zombies?
"Uh.." I began, looking at my friends but I stopped short when I realized that the zombies had started running towards us, with maniacal grins on their ghoulish faces.
We darted towards the hallways and noticed that all the classrooms were empty.
"Where is everybody?" I asked, looking around to see if the zombies were still chasing us.
"Forget about that," said Jesse. "If we don't do anything about this, we're toast."
Suddenly, I heard a sound, and noticed that a zombie had been sneaking up on one of my friends. "Look out!" I shouted, but it was too late. The zombie had grabbed him, and within seconds, he was transformed into a zombie, too. This was getting really terrible. We screamed and managed to make a run for it.
"Let's go to the principal's office!" One of us said, as we quickly bolted towards the small room. Jesse opened the door, and we peeped inside, only to find five confused zombies thoroughly examining various objects. One of them picked up a gun and aimed it at us, but we slammed the door just in time.
We searched the whole school, but found no one, except for the zombies. They were multiplying rapidly, and taking over the whole school. The zombies had cut off the communication, and destroyed the phones in the office room, so we weren't able to call anyone for help.
We hid behind some pillars as we stopped to catch our breath, and Jesse suddenly snapped his fingers.
"I have an idea!" he exclaimed. "The zombies appeared when the switch was flicked, right? What if we flick it again?"
I quickly glanced at the switch from my hiding spot, only to see that it was guarded.
"There's a zombie standing guard over the switch," I whispered. "If we go there, it's definitely going to be worse than what would happen if we went there in our game."
The zombies had just managed to catch another one of our friends. Only three of us remained.
"Suppose you both tried to distract the zombies while I flicked the switch?" Jesse asked, nervously. The plan was extremely risky. If the zombies caught us, we would become one of them. We didn't really have any other option, though.
We agreed to the plan, and quietly went towards the PT room. I sprang into action and charged in the direction of the switch. The guard, along with two other zombies sprinted towards us and caught my friend, as Jesse snuck behind the bushes and tiptoed towards the switch.
Things went horribly wrong when a zombie spotted him and grabbed him by the collar, transforming Jesse into a zombie.
I screamed, as the zombies all gathered towards me. I was encircled, and the zombies kept getting closer and closer.
Was this how it would all end? Trapped in the school as the last human being inside, fighting furiously for my life? Losing all my friends and family, and being turned into a zombie, too?
One of them stepped forward, pointed a gun at me and said, "Wake up! It's PT period!"
I opened my eyes to see Jesse tapping my head as my history teacher walked out of the classroom. I sat up quickly, my head still spinning from the vivid dream.
"Shall we play the Game of Zombies?" Jesse asked, closing his books.
"Definitely not," I replied. "Let's just play football."
