Beep! Beep! Beep! Beep! Beep!
Like a harpoon shot through sea water, the blaring of my alarm clock pierced my ears, driving away whatever school of dream that had been swimming about.
Beep! Beep! Beep! Beep! Beep!
I curled deeper into my blanket, hoping I'd be able to drown out the noise and immerse myself in the soothing waters of sleep.
Beep! Beep! Beep! Beep! Beep!
...Yeah it wasn't working.
"Ugh! All right, all right! I'm up! You can stop now." I groaned to my clock.
The beeping ceased and the room became awash with the sound of silence. I couldn't muster the strength to break this tranquillity.
"Mind giving me a little help here?" I spoke into the air.
My bed gradually began to tilt, becoming steeper and steeper till I eventually rolled off it and made contact with the carpeted floor.
"Oof! Yeah, that would never not be painful."
I rubbed my shoulder as I sat up on the floor, looking at the flip flops that bore the brunt of my fall.
"You did your best." I said to the slippers as I slid them on.
I walked towards my bathroom, the door swinging open as I approached it. I took a bath, brushed my teeth and put on my bathrobe.
Feeling refreshed from the vestiges of sleep, I stepped out of my room and headed for the kitchen where the coffee maker was already reaching a boil. As I grabbed a mug and started to pour out some coffee, the little TV in my living room came on.
I turned to it and the channels quickly flitted about, changing from the news channel I had fallen asleep to last night, to a home keeping channel that advertised all sorts of furniture and household appliances.
I sighed.
"Look, it doesn't matter how many times you show me. I can't buy stuff I can't afford at the moment. Besides, we don't need most of the stuff they're selling, all right?"
The TV lowered its volume but it still stayed on the home keeping channel. I blew on the coffee and slowly sipped it as I looked at the ostentatious stuff on display. They did look quite nice, but they might as well have been asking for two kidneys and a liver for those price tags.
I walked over to the couch I had slept in, the throw pillows already back in their usual places after being tossed away last night. I sank into the chair as the TV changed the channel to some nature documentary.
Work didn't start until 9 so I had some time. Some time to take in this peace, and to get that bit of quiet I wouldn't have once the day started in earnest.
I talked out loud about my plans for the day and about the mountain of work that awaited me at the office. I was the only person in the room, but I didn't mind. After all, in this little home of mine, even the walls had ears.
