It only took 12 seconds to destroy something that took 18 years,

to grow

to live

and to die

12 seconds

The first second was painless

The wind blew against your face.

It rocked your body

Back and forth

Like when your mother did when you were younger

The second second was agonizing.

Because the harsh wind

Reminded you of your father's voice

When he scolded you

The third second was unnerving.

Because you couldn't find a voice within yourself

Telling you that this was, in fact, a bad idea

The fourth second was reassuring.

Because when you stepped onto the ledge of the building

And looked down at the cement.

Your heart started to pound

And it relieved you that you still felt

Something

The fifth second was cold

When another breeze blew in and nipped at your fingertips,

And it reminded you

That Christmas was coming up soon

Your favourite holiday

The sixth second was nostalgic

You saw a young girl staggering limply to a dog scrambling to get away.

It looked like one you had when you were her age

His name was Butterscotch.

He died last year.

You really miss him.

The seventh second was happy.

The sun was finally peeking up over the cloud cover,

And it smiled down at you,

Warming you with its rays.

The sun was your only real friend.

You were really going to miss the sun.

The eighth second was sad.

Because you wished somebody had smiled at you,

Had warmed you,

The way the sun had.

And now you have to say goodbye to the sun.

The ninth second was guilty.

Because who would protect,

The children who looked at you with childish glee?

And who would tell them why Sissy wasn't coming back after all.

The tenth second was scary.

Because you took one foot and swung it off the ledge.

And you felt your body jerk forward.

Your stomach dropped as you looked down

To the nearing ground below.

You had always had a fear of heights.

The eleventh second was free.

You opened your arms,

And hugged the angels.

You felt your wings spread

And your mind ease.

As you no longer had to carry the weight of yourself.

The twelfth second was painless,

Because when you hit the cement

You didn't feel it.

I hope.

You don't know what happened,

On the thirteenth second,

Or the thirtieth second,

Or the first minute,

Or the second hour,

Or the third day.

Or the fourth week,

But I do.

"Uh, Crowley?"

"Yes?"

"Wasn't the Entrance ceremony yesterday?"

"Why yes! Why do you ask- Oh.."

A click echoed through the air.

"Who the fuck are you people and why did you save me, you assholes."
