Whether it was out of kindness or the role actually needed to be filled, Dumbledore hired me to be the assistant to the Potions Professor. And while I was grateful for the change in my fortune, I was apprehensive about working under a man I had never met. As it turned out, I did not have to wait more than a day to meet the Potions Professor.
My first impression of Severus Snape was of coldness. Not only did he look annoyed to be saddled with an assistant, but managed to do it in such a way as to convey the message wrapped in ice. Very well then, two could play that game.
"Do not expect this to be an easy job." Snape's voice was a low growl, "This is not a place for idleness."
As he spoke, he barely looked up from the papers on his desk. Instead of standing before him like a misbehaving student, I walked along the shelves filled with jars of herbs and other potion ingredients. Matching his level of detachment, I replied, "Then we should get along just fine."
Snape looked up from his paperwork, one eyebrow raised, "Is that so?"
I flashed him my most disarming smile, "Of course, If Professor Dumbledore thinks we will work well together, then why shouldn't we?"
