Chapter XIX: All At Once

The sounds of birds chirping and rays of sunlight blinded me as my eyes fluttered open.

I shuffled in the bed, the white sheets wrinkled next to me. The strong smell of his cologne lingered in the air and on the pillow next to me. My fingers ran over the empty space next to me and inhaled his scent. It was so powerful, it was almost intoxicating.

Pulling the sheets close to my chest, eventually noticing that I was naked, I bounced to my feet and saw my clothes a puddle on the floor next to the bathroom entrance. I slipped on a nightie from my tote and a bathrobe on top and kept exploring to find pieces of the puzzle. My bikini and his t-shirt were a trail, the last thing closest to the bed were his swim trunks.

The smell of waffles and pancakes swirled around me as I walked into the kitchen. A pair of black boxers caught my attention and saw his muscular back against me. His hair was disheveled and his skin glowed with the overflowing sunlight invading the kitchen.

I bravely tip-toed next to him and hugged him from behind. It was such a soothing sensation, feeling good touching him and hugging his body. He went rigid for a moment, but turned off the stove and shifted to face me.

As if we were both unconscious, he leaned in and gave me a soft kiss on the lips. He even hugged me tighter and pulled back a few strands of my hair behind my ear. His long, soft fingers began to fumble my bathrobe off and mess with the nightie straps, slowly slipping them off of my shoulders. Then, he picked me up and kissed me again, this time much more hungry than the small smooch he had just given me.

Back in the bed with no boxer or nightie, it felt so surreal. The man, who had no clue that we were married, was doing the deed here. It gave me one more reason to hate myself, allowing this to go until the point of no return.

Sweat stuck to our skin like sprinkles and our hearts pounded like a wild rampage. Max had dozed off and I lie there on my bed, looking at the ceiling, processing everything we had just done. It was one of those moments where you had to decide on dunking your face in ice cold water or pinch yourself to death, just to make sure you’re not dreaming.

I had already showered and ate a few pancakes when he awoke. I heard the shower head turn on and off very swiftly. When he walked out of the room, his hair was wet and tousled, but was wearing cargo shorts and a polo shirt. Although he wasn’t in his handsome doctor clothing, he looked incredibly sexy, and that made me instantly want to jump back into bed with him.

He sat on one of the stools looking at me for a second and then closed his eyes. “You might want to change, because we’re going on a little hike.”

I almost choked on my coffee. “What?”

“You didn’t think we’d stay inside all day? Come on, I want you to see the view and the small creek.”

Sierra must’ve known about the outdoors trip that she packed me some Nike pacer shorts, a simple tank top and a DRI-fit running jacket. I slipped on my high-tech boots and jumped down the stairs.

When I got to the living room, I saw him packing a backpack with a few water bottles and granola bars. He gave me a half smile and walked past me. He called my name and I did my best to follow his voice. I heard footsteps descending, and saw a red blur make its way out the side exit.

I stood there idiotically next to the car waiting for him to reappear. As I slipped on my sunglasses, the garage door hummed open and out came a giant pickup truck. A Silver, four door Volkswagen Amarok backed out of the garage carefully without crashing against the Kia. It shone brightly, clean as a whistle under the strong sunlight. A tainted window rolled down, finally able to see him, wearing his sunglasses as well, and motioned me to get inside.
