She was running.
This was the only thing she had done, the only thing she could think of doing.
Run, it echoed in her mind. Run. Run. Run.
She had been doing this for days. Running.
Run, then take a break, eat some food, drink some water, and run again. Find a place to sleep, then run. Run, break, food and water, run, sleep, run.
She had lost count of the days. The time.
She couldn't be caught. Not now. Not when she had sacrificed so much, too much, to get to this point.
She reached out for her belly, where a small bump could be slightly seen, if you put in the effort to look.
It reminded her of him. The only person in her life who didn't judge her. The only man who didn't mind where she came from, or who she was. The only one who'd ever loved her.
And now he was dead.
Tears streamed down her face, like a waterfall. Just the thought of him being nonexistent in her life was enough to crush everything she ever dreamed of, she ever hoped to achieve.
She still remembered his smiling tear-soaked face when he said goodbye. The words he uttered, the tone he said them in.
...
"My love, I know the time we've spent together is short, but I want you to know that I don't regret any of it. I don't regret meeting you. I don't regret loving you and I don't regret saving you."
"I love you Eve. I want you to know that. I love you and you know it. But the time isn't right. I need you to do something for me, you hear me?" He was still smiling, but she could see how his eyes were filled with tears.
"Yes." She had said, tears streaming down her face, unable to say more.
"Good. They are coming, and we don't have much time left. I will distract them, and give you the time to run. You have to run as far away as possible. Hide you tracks, and if you hear cars or anything suspicious, hide. You hear me? You have to run and hide. Eve? She could see how anxious he was even though he tried to hide it. This wasn't the time to be sad. She had to get her shit together.
"I know." When she had finally spoken up she could see the relief filling his face.
"I love you." If she didn't say those words now, there would probably never be another chance to say them.
"Eve..." He looked at her. Took the time to take her in. She did the same. His beautiful gray eyes glistening with tears, his curly brown hair dribling with sweat. His tall build and his sandalwood scent enveloping her. She took a deep breath, hoping she could be filled with his scent forever. But that would be impossible. They both knew this would be their last moment together.
Then, without saying anything else, he pulled her into his arms, and gave her the most heartbreaking embrace ever. They stood like that for a while. When he pulled away it felt like a thousand needles were piercing trough her. When she looked up, his face, brimming with tears, came into view.
He looked her right in the eye.
"Take care of the little one, okay? Promise me." he said in a shaky voice.
"I will. I will, even if it means i have to give my life for it." She answered sincerely.
He gave her one last look before running up to the road, where their cars began to be visible. God damn people. Why now of all times, did they have to show up?
He offered her one last glance, smiled and disappeared into the darkness.
She began running the opposite way, towards the woods. She had only run for a few minutes, before hearing shouts and gunshots.
Every time she heard a shot, she instinctively curled up. Then suddenly silence. Utter silence. It could only mean one thing. One thing she didn't want to admit but had to. He was gone. The love of her life was gone.
The though, the realization almost broke her down. Almost.
"It's not time yet Eve. Not today." She told herself.
"You can't break down now. You still have a job left to do."
Her legs felt weak. Her body lifeless. There was only on thing there kept her going. One thing. Her promise to him.
She touched her belly gently.
"Don't worry Jade, we're going to survive and I'll make sure of it."
She lifted her head, determination filling her Asian black eyes, and started running again with determined steps. Nothing could stop her now.
