Twenty four years later
...
Jade looked around amidst the chaos that was unfolding in front of her.
Just a few minutes earlier she had been playing happily around and laughing with her mom.
Then a series of knocking noises interrupted, and an unfamiliar but at the same time familiar language was heard. The people knocking on the door began to yell and kick at the door, breaking from the power behind the kicking.
She looked up, towards her mom, and when she saw the fearful and anxious expression on her face, she immediately knew something was wrong. She may only be five years old, but her intellect was way ahead of others her age. She had always been different.
Her mom pulled her into her arms, and ran as fast as she could to their bedroom. As they reached the door, her mom kicked it open, and locked it behind her.
"Mom, what's happening?" Jade asked in confusion.
Her mom didn't answer, only offered her a quick look and hurried her actions further. Before Jade even knew of it, she had been stuffed inside a small closet, hidden behind some of the furniture.
Her mom reached up towards her neck, and revealed an amulet hidden inside her dress. She always carried that around, and even slept with it. One time she had asked why, and her mom had told her a story.
The story had been a beautiful story about a man and a woman, surviving together and building a strong bond, as though they had been like one of those fairytale couples, overcoming everything together.
When her mom opened the amulet which Jade had thought only had been a round and beautiful gold accessory, she showed her a photo of herself and a man. That man was apparently her dad.
When she asked about his whereabouts her mother just showed her a sad smile. "I will tell you in due time, but right now it is time to sleep. Goodnight my little devil"
It hadn't seemed like the right time to ask, so she didn't linger further and went to sleep, but now she regretted it.
Her mom was shedding silent tears, while looking at the picture inside the amulet. Then she removed the amulet from her neck, and hung it around Jade's neck.
The cold material was like a warm embrace but at the same time like a cold reminder that something was about to happen. Something awful and terrifying that was bound to change her life forever.
She wanted to reach out to her mom and tell her to stay with her, but she couldn't move her body. It was like being trapped, thousands of chains binding her to the closet and forcing her to stay still.
"My little devil. I need you to do something for me. I need you to stay silent through this, even if you hear something. Stay silent and don't come out. Some dangerous people have arrived, so we need to play a little hide and seek. This will be your hiding spot. I am going to hide somewhere else, okay sweetie."
Jade didn't want to but her body moved on its own, and nodded.
Her mom bent down, and pulled her into a warm embrace that smelled like flowers and sunshine.
Jade knew deep down that there was a high probability that she may never see her mother again, but she didn't want to admit it. She tried to hold her mom back, but she backed out and pulled herself away. Away from her grip.
A sad and determined gaze filled her moms eyes. Jane could see her fighting spirit returning. "Sweetie, when everything has calmed down, you have to go to your Aunt, okay?"
