Autumn, 2014
(aurelia)
"Aurelia, time to wake up!"
I clicked my phone off and rubbed my eyes before sitting up on my bed. I'd woken up an hour earlier and I was lying in bed scrolling through my phone. I'd woken up earlier than usual because today was the first day of 7th grade. Aunt May said I should try going to school at least once to see if I would like it. I doubted I would but to please Aunt May, I let her enroll me into Brooklyn Middle School. I was far from excited and my anxiety was already kicking in.
I hopped off the bed and changed into my uniform, patting down my hair as I looked into the mirror in my room. I forgot to put my bonnet on before I went to sleep last night and my hair showed the consequences. I went downstairs and sat down at the dining table as Aunt May made breakfast.
"Good morning, Aurelia," she said, grabbing a plate from the cabinets. "Are you excited for today?"
"No," I replied, checking the time on my phone. I had half an hour left before school started.
"Well, you'll just have to see if you end up liking school," she said, bringing the plate with pancakes and a glass full of orange juice.
"Right," I mumbled, cutting up the pancake and taking bites. "Where's Peter? Isn't he supposed to drop me off?"
"There was an incident in the Daily Bugle," she replied, returning to the kitchen.
"Off saving the world as always," I scoffed, placing my fork down and sitting back in my chair.
"You know how busy he is," Aunt May said. "He said he'd pick you up and take you to the park after school."
"Because that makes everything better," I rolled my eyes.
"Aurelia, please," Aunt May said, turning around, marks near her eyebrows.
"Sorry," I picked up my fork and continued eating the pancakes.
I was always so annoyed when things didn't go according to schedule. Especially when it came to Peter. I get that he's a superhero and all but can't he spare a few hours a day for family?
"I'm not hungry, Aunt May," I said, putting my fork down, staring at the half eating pancake.
"But you barely ate," she said, looking at my plate.
"I'll eat something at school," I replied, standing up and taking my food to the counter.
"Let me get a sweater. Head to the car," she said, pulling out some saran wrap from underneath the counter.
I nodded and headed to the bathroom, brushing my teeth and putting some water on my hair in an attempt to calm it down. It worked but I knew it wouldn't last long. I picked up my backpack sitting on the couch and grabbed the keys off the coffee table, walking outside and into the car.
I slipped into the front passenger seat and sat in silence as I waited for Aunt May. She came out in a few minutes and started the car, driving down our neighborhood.
We soon arrived at the school and I grabbed my backpack and opened the door. "Have fun Ellia," she smiled as I stepped out of the car.
"Thanks, Aunt May," I smiled, slipping on my backpack and closing the door. I turned around and walked up the steps into the school entrance. We'd gotten a tour during our enrollment so I knew where all the classes were. My first period was Room 23, English. So that's where I headed to. It was best to be early than be rushing in with the rest of the students, getting caught in the traffic jam.
