We made our way back home, the atmosphere in the car was heavy, the silence punctuated only by the occasional sniffle from Isa.
Once we reached home, she collapsed onto her bed, tears streaming down her face, Laurel sat right beside her, she gently tousled Isa's hair. I sat on the corner of the bed, wiping away my own tears."I feel so stupid, mom. It's been so long Susannah was sick this whole time & I didn't even know." Isa's said in a feeble voice.
"That's exactly how she wanted it to be." Laurel replied, her voice choked with tears.
"How long have you known?"
"Since the spring, I didn't wanna burden you kids with it, she wanted one summer with you guys."
"E..evei did you know about it as well?" Isa asked without looking in my direction.
I took a deep breath, struggling to find the right words, "I..I knew, conrad..he told me.."The room fell into an even deeper silence, Isa turned her tear-streaked face towards me.
"I thought I could trust you, why didn't you tell me? how could you Evelyn?" she cried.
"I'm sorry, I..I just didn't want to ruin this day and that's how Susannah wanted it to be." I explained.
Isa reached out for my hand, I clasped her hand tightly and we hugged each other.
"I'm sorry, Evei.." Isa whispered.
"It's okay." I replied softly, tears streaming down my own face.Steven burst into the room, his eyes swollen because of crying, "She's not gonna get better, is she?"
"No." Laurel cried.
Without hesitation, he joined us and the four of us hugged each other, as if holding on to each other's support.☆☆☆☆
In the evening, Laurel called us down for dinner. As we all slowly made our way to the dinner table, I could see the sadness that etched on everyones faces.
Susannah had sensed our sorrow, determined to see us smile, she cracked jokes and made silly faces. The corners of our mouths turned up reluctantly at first, but as she continued a genuine smile began to bloom across my face, admiring her.Isabel and I agreed to take on the task of helping Laurel with the dishes.
Once we had finished the task, Isa and I approached Susannah, Isa took Susannah's hand in hers.
"Promise me you will never leave us alone." Isa said, tears welling up in her eyes.
"Never." Susannah smiled.
"We love you." I said and hugged her, Isa also joined us.The summer was now coming to an end, but this time it had taught me some of the most profound lessons of life. I had learnt the importance of spending quality time with the people we loved and treasured. I also realized the true essence of family, it wasn't just about shared blood, but about the love and support we provide for one another. It was about being there for the people we cared for, through the highs and lows.

Sitting side by side, I and Conrad stared out into the vast expanse of the ocean.
"I can't believe she said yes." Conrad whispered.
"You did it you changed her mind." I smiled.
"It wasn't me, it was jere, he did it."
I didn't reply but nodded.
"Eve, I am sorry for being so shitty this whole summer."
"You were going through all of this alone, I wish you told me a bit sooner."
"I really wanted to, almost did it a couple of times."
"There are so many things I want to say to you." He added.
"Don't, not now."
"Why?"
"Because you really really need somebody right now and I don't wanna be the kind of person who takes advantage of that."
"You aren't Evelyn, I asking you because I want you. I don't just need somebody, I need you."I couldn't help but blush under his gaze. He delicately brushed strands of my hair behind my ear and leaned in and kissed me.
As we pulled away, he gave me a warm smile, "Eve, just wait here for a second." He darted towards the beach house. Confused, I waited there, a few moments later, he re-emerged, clutching something in his hands.
Curiosity grew as he carefully revealed the painting he had made. It portrayed the two of us, in our childhood, playing around the beach house.
"We looked so cute & innocent back then." he smiled.
"I still am." I said.
"It's beautiful," I whispered.
Tears welled up in my eyes as I engulfed him in a tight embrace, "I need you too, Conrad."
"I..I umm..I wanted to ask you something." He shyly smiled.
"What?"
"Will you be my girlfriend?" He said that so quickly, I couldn't help but smile.
"Yes, I'd love to be." I whispered.
He leaned closer, his lips softly brushing against my forehead in a gentle and tender kiss.☆☆☆☆
As summer drew to a close, we reluctantly prepared to part ways, knowing that distance would separate us for a while but deep in our hearts, we knew that this wasn't the end.
