Shinichi's POV
The person behind this murder is you-""Is you! Mikawasu Ayame!" A female voice suddenly yelled, interrupting me as the doors slammed open startling everyone at the scene.
I quickly turned around ready to lash out at whoever dared to enter a crime scene when my eyes widened. My lips parted from each other as I tried to speak but I couldn't utter a word.
"I have to say, finding out the killer was truly a pain in the a** for me but you forgot about something, Mikawasu-san." The woman pulled out a clear plastic bag which had a kitchen knife inside of it. "The evidence."
"Ran.." I gritted my teeth as I looked at her with narrowed eyes.
She seemed to notice me in the room and we locked eyes for a second. I stared in a daze as I inspected her. She looked more grown now since I last saw her. Her long, brown hair that once reached her waist was now below her shoulders.
She was taller and was now around my height. Unlike other women her age, she was slightly taller than them and that is most likely from genetics.
We locked eyes for a second and I was expecting her to look away, but instead a wide and devilish smirk formed its way to her lips. The expression on her face made my entire body freeze and tense up. The look on her face was completely different from when we were younger.
Those eyes that once looked up at me with love and admiration now looked cold and distant. It was like she decided to forget all the childhood memories we shared and instead of looking at me like a friend she could lean on, she saw me as a rival.
But I could care less about what she thinks about me.
My eyes narrowed down into a glare as she walked closer to the crime scene. Police officers stopped what they were doing just to observe the woman who walked in unannounced. She was walking proudly with the heels clicking against the wooden floor every time she took a step.
Her hands were buried deep inside the pockets of the black trench coat she was wearing. I couldn't help but to grit my teeth as she stated all of her deductions. What got me over the edge even more was that everything Ran was saying was right.
From start to finish, everything was right. My hands balled up into a tight fist as I watched police officers handcuff Ayame-San after she admitted everything. How she used that knife to stab her husband in the chest due to her finding out he was cheating on her.
She was out of her mind and unaware until he was bleeding out, slowly dying and lying still in the middle of his office. And in a shock, she wasn't able to hide the evidence properly.
Ayame-San was taken to the police station and everyone proceeded to praise Ran for her quick reasoning.
‘It was me though. I did that.’
I couldn't take it anymore and I started to stomp my way towards the police officers surrounding her. I shoved my way inside the circle and immediately grabbed her by the arm.
“Excuse us, I have something important to say to her.” I said cold, making the other officers freeze in their spot.
I pulled Ran into an empty office room and slammed the door behind us. She didn't even fight back to try to argue about me suddenly grabbing her arm in a rough manner. What was she planning..?
“Can you explain to me why the hell you are here!?” My voice was loud but it didn't seem to bother her at all. Instead she looked up at me with a smirk.
“What's wrong about a Detective helping out in a case?”
“A…detective?” I stared down at her confused. “What exactly do you-”
My eyes widened realizing what she meant. Her smirk remained on her face as she pulled out a badge wallet from her pocket. She raised it up and flipped it open showing me a picture that was taken of her with her name, race, gender, height and in big bold letters it read “Japan Police Department”. Aand below was “Detective”.
“I'm an official detective here in Japan now. That means I have access to all these cases!” Ran explained, flipping the wallet closed before placing it back inside her pocket.
My jaw clenched as I tried to remain calm. “Didn't mystery cases like these annoyed you to the point you wanted to rip your ears out? Why all of a sudden you're a detective?!”
She let out an exhausted sigh, rolling her eyes as she turned her head away. “People change, Shinichi.”
Her hand went to the door but before she could open it completely, I slammed my hand on the door pushing it closed. Her figure was trapped in between my arms, her back facing me. She didn't seem shocked, she didn't didn't flinch at me suddenly slamming the door.
“That's bullsh*t.” I whispered, my hands turning into a fist as it remained on the door. “What's the real reason, huh? When we were in high school, you couldn't stand hearing me talk about the cases I solved. Why a change of mind.”
Ran turned her head to the side, her eyes gazing at the floor before looking up at mines. I was almost startled to see the cold and expressionless look on her face. Not once have I seen her make this face. Not on me.
She turned her entire body around so that she was now facing me. “That's one thing I absolutely hate about you. You're so clueless and ignorant about your life that it seems that only cases fill up your mind!” She paused before continuing, “The reason I became like this is your fault. I don't care how much you want to deny it, it was your fault and it will continue to be your fault!”
I looked at her confused and irritated at the same time. “What exactly is my fault!?”
“Don't you dare try to act dumb right now!” She yelled, pushing me away from her. “I want you to carve this in your head okay? I am not planning to be your friend, your girlfriend, or your partner to solve cases!”
She grabbed me by the collar of my shirt and pulled me down to her level so that she reached my ear. One of her hands raised up to my cheeks to keep my head in place.
“From this moment going forward, I will be your enemy, your rival. Do you understand?” Her grip on my cheeks tightened making her nails dig into my skin. “I will make sure you don't get any credit from the cases that you solve, just like what happened earlier today. Kudo Shinichi, you will lose.”
She finally let go of my shirt and pushed my head away from her grasp. I winced slightly from the pain of her nails but I continued to glare down at her and she walked away from me, slamming the door closed leaving me alone in the empty room.
My lips curled up into a smirk as I pushed my hair back. “You're just a newbie in this...Good luck trying to reach the top where I stand, my rival.”
