As Clary picked up the ringing phone, she and I exchanged the same look... Frightened. Who could that person be? Why would someone call this late in the night? Why did I make her answer it?
"Clary," I said just as she was putting it to her ear. "You don't have to do this, it was stupid of me to make you do it. Who knows who it could be?" I slowly start reaching for the phone with my hand, and gently pick it out of her grasp. The phone is still ringing. There is no caller ID so we both don't know who it is.
"Ella I'll do it, you dared me to. And besides, you know how many times I made you do something horrible like lick a trashcan? I'll answer it. Don't you want to know who is on the other line?" Clary was right, I do want to know who is calling. But at the same time all my senses are telling me no. But who listens to their gut anyway? Ok, lets do this.
I nod to her to confirm that we are answering this phone call. My game face is ready, and I'm all ears.
Clary hits the answer call button on the phone then turns it on speaker so we both can hear what is happening. It takes the person on the other line a while to realize that we actually answered because they are completely silent.
After what seems like minutes but only mere seconds go by, they person on the other end begins to say what they are calling for.
"Hello, is this Miss Ella's residents?" The person asks. From the tone of the voice we can both tell that the person is a woman. She also has a slight accent but I can't figure it out. It's a mixture of English, mid-Western, and Southern. She almost sounds like... I stop myself from saying the word. No, she couldn't be, could she? No, how would she know my name? I look over at Clary who is also confused.
I turn to face Clary and put my hand over the phone. "Do you think..." I whisper. She was thinking the same thing because before I could finish my sentence she was nodding her head. "Yeah," she replied.
I took my hand off the phone to ask the woman on the other line who exactly she is.
"Well you see Ella, I am not what you think," she took a long break in between to ponder her next sentence. "I am, for someone who might refer to me as, a fortune teller."
It took me awhile to comprehend this. She is a fortune teller, and she is calling me. But I never went to a fortune teller in my life! How could she know my name and my phone number? Unless this is a joke. I bet Joe, from work, set it all up. He is a big prankster, he probably is on the other line as well, waiting to see what my reaction is.
"So you are a fortune teller huh?" I hesitantly say, "What kind of things do you predict?" I ask, hoping for her to choke up and reveal that this is all a joke and that she didn't mean to call me at this time of night. But that is not what I got, instead she gave me an answer.
"Love," Is all she replied. "I predict love Miss Ella, and right now, I see yours."
Ok, wait up. What kind of sick thing is this? Who in their right mind would believe anything that is coming out of her mouth right now? I mean, nobody would... I guess I spoke too soon.
Clary leaps forward toward me and pushes me to the couch. She pins my arms and legs down and still manages to put her hand over my mouth to prevent me from speaking. "Wha...What was that..." I try to speak through her fingers, but she just ignores me and picks up the phone to put it on privet. Oh no, what is she doing now?
"Uh huh, uh huh, ok, thank you. Yes ok I'll tell her right away. Thank you very much, I'll see to it," Clary sets the phone down and a grin starts to form on her face. What has she done?
"Clary..." I say softly as she lets me go from her grip. "What did you just do?" I stare at her blankly and watch as she is avoiding looking at me to speak.
"I uh, I got your telling for you. She said you would meet your true love at..."
"Stop!" I interrupt her. "I don't want to hear any of this. If I am going to find love, it will be because I found the right man by going on dates. It won't be because of 'love at first sight.' That doesn't exist!" At this point I have already stood up and started walking towards the kitchen. I need some food. I go in the fridge to grab the takeout I bought and bring it back into the living room where Clary is stretched out on the couch.
"Want some?" I ask raising the takeout bag to show her what I have in my hands. She nods and I join her on the couch as well, moving her legs on top of mine so I can fit on the couch. "Don't worry, I'll be alright, I don't need no fortune teller to tell me my future, I just want to live it without knowing whats going to happen," I say hugging my best friend. She thinks I'm not going to find someone and that I will be alone, but she wants to help me. So I guess this was trying to help me find someone.
Clary returns my hug and whispers in my ear, "That's a shame because we are watching the Notebook and Dear John tonight, and we have already seen those movies a thousand times so you will know what's going to happen," she says. Man, she always knows what to say to cheer me up. I start smiling at the corners of my mouth, then I put the movie in the DVD player.
"Let's get this party started!" I say. I love girls night in with my best friend Clary. They are the best.
