"STOP RUNNING AROUND THE DAMN HOUSE!" Their father shouted angrily as the twins booked it up the stairs. Veneer laughed as Velvet chased him up the stairs and towards his room.
Veneer was fast, rushing inside his room pushing against his sister as he attempted to close the door, laughing to the point of tears as he did so. But Velvet was faster and being the stronger of the two easily shoved the door back open and rushed at Veneer. Pushing him against the walls of his room, Veneer squirmed against his sisters shoves, moving closer and closer to the window that had been left open.
Something about circulation of the air. Neither twins had noticed nor had they really cared as they continued their play fighting. Velvet closed her eyes for a second. It was only a second she swears on her life that it was. But it was a second too long. A second that she let take away her brother's independence.
It all blurred together. The scream that Veneer released as the dull metal fenced that separated their yard and the neighbors stabbed forced its way into his spine. The cries and pleas for help and tears that kept shoving their way out of his eyes, pushing past each other as they rushed down his cheeks, mixing into the bloodied grass. How Velvet had almost broken her nose tripping down the wood stairs as she rushed to her brother. The heat from the slap she'd gotten and the bruising of her arm as her dad grabbed at her, telling her that she fucked up big time, and the tears that later accompanied her slightly bruised cheeks.
Velvet does remember very clearly how long it took for her to see her brother again. She remembers the cold and unwelcoming feeling of the waiting room. The sounds of monitors and the clacking of keys on a cheap plastic keyboard as a woman nearby talked to her parents. She clearly remembers the tense and slow drive back home. She remembers how she fidgeted in her seat as the silence from her parents ate its way into her. Tearing her apart layer by layer as it told her how screwed she was when they got to their destination. She remembers how she was told to stop moving around in her uncomfortable leather seat.
When they did get home, Velvet was immediately told to go upstairs, her dad making it very clear that he didn't want to see her face until tomorrow. Her mother refused to look at her, choosing to instead give her the cold shoulder, watching as her dearest dad unlocked a cabinet that contained tall and filled glass bottles. She wasn't allowed to see Veneer for the weeks he stayed at the hospital. When he did get home, he arrived in wheel chair much to Velvets excitement and surprise.
Running up and hugging him in the tightest of bear hugs, quickly being pushed off as Veneer yelped in pain, watching as their dad carried him up to his room. His mother following with the wheel chair. She was told his room was off limits and should she be caught the punishment would be severe. But Velvet never cared about the rules and she certainly couldn't have given a flying feather about one that separated her from her sibling.
The cold night air nipped at her legs and arms as she snuck from the down the dark and miles long hall, past her parents room where they laid asleep, she played the dangerous game of red light, green light with their snores as she crawled past. Walking into her brother's freezing cold room and gently shaking him awake. Noting the strange white wrapping on his back and dark purple blob that painted the surrounding area. Standing out against his pale skin.
"veneer" his name not daring to be called even a hair above a whisper. "veneer?" Again.
"Vene-"
"Stop shaking me" Veneer said. Not caring how loud it'd came out.
"Would you turn over so I could talk to you?"
"I can't"
"What? What do you mean you can't?"
Veneer was more than tired and the shaking from his sister only caused him pain to his lower back or, at least, what he could still feel around it.
"I just can't"
Velvet gave a harsh sigh as a response and crawled over her brother and onto his bed. Frowning as she stared at him. Was he that mad at her?
"Velvet its too late for us to play right now"
"I know that and I'm not trying to 'play right now'" Velvet said slightly annoyed that her brother kept his eyes closed. "I was trying to talk to you?".
Veneer opened his eyes ever so slightly. Attempting to stay awake so he could hear what Velvet had to say. He missed her at the hospital and was upset when his slightly older sister didn't come to see him like his parents did. He let his face show as much when Velvet asked what happened at the hospital, he could have told her had she come to see him.
"Why would you care, you didn't even see me when I was there"
...
"Why didn't you come see me? I was scared and sad and you weren't there!"
Velvet stayed quiet. Having been so excited to see her brother that she hadn't realized Veneer could have been mad at her. What if Veneer didn't want to see HER because he was angry.
"They... they told me I couldn't" Velvet confessed. Shedding a few tears as her memory let her very clearly recall why. Their dad telling her to stay in the car or stay in the waiting area. Making sure to emphasis that if it wasn't for her disobedience they wouldn't even be here.
Veneer softened his gaze, moving his hand to his sister's shoulder in an attempt to comfort her. Watching as she slightly flinched and shoved his hand away. He put his arm back to his side of his bed, drawing smiley faces into his fluffy blanket.
"im sorry for hurting you" Velvet said with all the sincerity her tiny 7 year old body could muster up. Wiping the tears off her face and sniffling.
Veneer pulled his blanket from under Velvet and pulled it over her shivering body, accidentally covering up her face and laughing as she pulled it back down and gently shoved at him. Velvet crying ceased as she joined Veneer in sleep. Not caring about whatever punishment awaited her tomorrow.
