Rushing through the snow covered forest, I grasp the basket of cookies with my black gloved hand. The harsh weather wouldn't stop me bringing my daughter her favourite snack, I always love seeing that happy smile of hers.
The snow crunches under my feet as I continue forth, before . . . I trip over, something causing me to stumble and drop the basket. My eyes first dart to the small hamper...thank the lords nothing happened to the goods inside. Eyes slowly drifting to the cause of my mishap, horror courses through system...
Tallulah.
Chapter one, winter's Lamant.
The unforgiving winter storm had chosen its next victim, first Charlie's kid now the sweet girl I once knew...dead before me. The fear in her lifeless eyes caused a sting to form in my chest, forcing me to turn my eyes away from the horrific sight. A tightness forms in my chest, replacing the sting I felt earlier...this wasn't really happening, was it? Unwanted thoughts come to mind, the mental imagery flashing in and out.
I slowly reach out to the basket, rising onto my feet, eyes meeting the poor girl again.
"I'm so...so sorry." My voice comes out strained, my gloved hands clenching as I tear up, feeling utterly useless.
I didn't know how she ended up here, all alone, in the middle of the forest. Wilbur was away on tour, it wasn't his fault.
Yes. Yes it was.
I crouch down, scooping Tallulah up, hugging her limp body close as a shaky exhale leaves my lips.
"You didn't deserve this, you sweet little melody" Once again, the words were hushed, too scared to go above a whisper, I start to walk back home with a new task in mind.
After an hour of walking in the snow, my fingers felt numb and so did my heart, the poor lifeless innocent essence I carried in my arms...mentally hurt me. I release a heavy sigh, propping her up against the porch of my cottage, to my luck Poppy was asleep...since it was around four in the morning.
Shit. I left her cookies back at the...spot.
"This is more important " I tell myself, grabbing Poppy's gardening trowel as I prepare myself.
I push the trowel into the soil. . . .
"I'm sorry, dear" I spoke quietly as I shovel the last of it onto her, standing up, I wipe at the dirt on my cheek.
"Mama?" I hear a little voice peep out, causing me to flinch, my eyes widening as I step back.
"Oh hello my dear." I force a smile, crouching down to embrace her in a hug, noticing her small dragon tail swaying back and forth.
"Mama what were you doing?" Poppy asks, her brown locks a mess, she looked so similar to Tallulah..her brown doe eyes blinking once as she steps close to embrace me. I fix the small poppy clip in her hair and smooth out the red dress she wore.
"Oh nothing...just..would you like to plant a poppy here?" My head directs to where Tallulah lies. The little dragon nods with a huge smile, rushing over to the poppy's already lined up in the flowerbed full of her favourite. Poppies.
I release a quivering sigh, standing up and heading inside, the situation was starting to get to me...more than it had before.
I open the oak door, inside was warm and welcoming as I step in, closing the door behind. The sound of the phone ringing gradually fill my senses as I just stand in the centre of the living room, eyes on the crackling fireplace.
Forcing myself to answer the telephone, I hear a familiar voice,
"Hello dear, how's Tallulah?"
