Chapter 1: The Surge

Clips of the Final Battle from The Rise Of The Ultimate Spinjitzu Masters are shown on an old film reel. "(voice) The Ultimate Battle. The battle to end all battles. It feels like ages ago. After the Golden and Silver Ninja defeated the Overlord, much of Ninjago City was in ruins. It was a time to reflect on our pasts, and build for our future," Kai said. A photo of the ninja and their allies is shown in the Ninjago City paper. Reconstruction of the city is now underway. "Great work, people. Together we can do it. Transportation group, align with engineering," Cyrus Borg said. "(voice) Ninjago City soon became New Ninjago City. And it became the centre of great technological advancements. But without an enemy to fight, the age of the ninja came to an end," Kai said. The scene switches to a bathroom where Jay is seen holding a camera in a mirror reflection while Kai is heard scatting. The scatting stops. Kai is seen taking a shower and notices Jay. "Hey! How about a little privacy, you–?" Kai said. The clip stops; Kai is shown to be in a classroom wearing a suit and operating a film projection. "Whoa! This isn't supposed to be in here! Lights please!" Kai said. Students begin giggling because he can't turn off the projector. "Ugh! Seriously?" Kai said. "Come quick! Mr Zane's on the fritz!" a student said. Students are laughing as Zane is shorting out. "Up. No, down. Whoa!" Zane said. "What's going on here?" Cole asked. "Brad got an ultra remote from New Ninjago City and it's controlling Mr Zane," Sally explained as Zane is whimpering. "How do you turn this thing off?" Cole asked. "Hurry Cole. My liquid spirit level is making me less level," Zane begged. Cole ends up smashing the remote and Zane stops. "Ah," Zane said, relieved "Mr Cole's the worst," Brad complained. "I heard that," Cole said. A bell rings and the kids run out, bumping into Cole. "Ah, recess, my favourite time," Cole said.

Darkly's Boarding School is shown to have been bought by the ninja and renamed Wu's Academy. Some students are shown laughing in the yard while the ninja go to the teacher's lounge. "All right! Who took my pudding cup? My name was clearly written on it," Jay sighed. "I didn't see "Motor Mouth" on it," Cole said, throwing the empty pudding cup in the bin. "I'm telling the headmaster," Jay threatened. "Leave me out of this, I'm on break too," Wu replied. "Relax Jay, you can have mine," Kai said, tossing it over. "But this isn't cold," Jay complained. Zane then flips a button on his arm and freezes the cup. "Oh, give me. Mmm. Is anyone else chapped that Lloyd and Ophelia get to be the Gold and Silver Ninja and fly around accepting awards while we're stuck here as teachers with no powers? I mean, Ophelia hasn't come to see us once since the Final Battle. I miss our elemental weapons," Jay complained. "Ophelia has not been to any of the award ceremonies. She has been busy travelling while studying under my brother and helping him and Misako set up his monastery," Wu revealed. "What, why does she want to see Lord Garmadon?" Kai questioned. "He no longer goes by Lord, Kai. He is now Sensei Garmadon and he is helping Ophelia master the new powers she and Lloyd gained after defeating the Overlord. Besides, the two have always gotten along well," Wu explained. "Why is it that when I teach, I get the feeling that none of the boys are listening," Nya complained, walking in. "Hi Miss Nya, I saved you some pudding," Jay said in a lovesick voice. "What'd we talk about?" Nya asked, annoyed. "Oh, right, boundaries," Jay said, retreating. "Hey did you guys hear the news?" Nya asked. "There's trouble?" Kai asked. "Danger?" Jay asked. "An emergency?" Zane asked. "A new menace?" Cole asked. "No. We got clearance for a field trip," Nya said, causing the ninja to groan. "Not just any field trip. A field trip to tour Borg Industries," Nya said. "Ah! Not the Borg Industries. As in home to super genius recluse Cyrus Borg? Inventor of the hover car and everything else cool in this world!" Jay exclaimed, before groaning when Zane kicked him. "Who cares about Cyrus Borg? If you ask me, people should concern themselves with the lessons of the past. Not waste their time on the disposal fads of tomorrow when," Kai said, before groaning realising the ninja have left.

The ninja, Wu and the students are all outside, in the school bus."Why can't we take the Ultra Dragon? Or the UltraSonic Raider," Brad asked. "Because they don't have one of these. Pretty cool, huh? I'm on a microphone. I am the MC. The Mighty Cole," Cole said, doing some weird dance moves. "Mr Cole is the worst," Brad said. "I heard that," Cole said. "So we really are going back to the city. We haven't been back there since– well, you know," Kai said. "Yesterday is gone, tomorrow is yet to come. We only have today. Or else this offer expires. Get a move on, Nya," Wu said. "Aye, aye Sensei," Nya said. "Welcome to New Ninjago City. The future is what we make it," Cyrus said on TV. "Wow. You leave town for a short while and– Aaah!" Nya said as the bus crashed. "Ugh. Who here still uses wheels anymore? Get with the program!" the postman said. "Don't worry, we'll free you up. Time for some old-school muscle tool," Cole said. Cole goes outside the bus and lifts up the postman's van, freeing the bus. "Stand back, pedestrian," A robot said. "Who you calling pedestrian?" Cole asked. "It appears our help is not welcome," Zane said. "Well, I prefer travelling the old-fashioned way– on foot. Besides, it's not like we can't find where we're going," Wu said. Kai is grunting as he's repeatedly squished by the automatic doors in Borg Tower. "Welcome to Borg Industries. I'm P.I.X.A.L, Cyrus's Primary Interactive X-ternal Assistance Lifeform. I'm sorry to hear about the traffic accident," Pixal said. "Wow, news travels fast," Cole said. "Mr. Borg would like to see the ninja on the 100th floor. If the others would follow me for the rest of the tour," Pixal said. Kai grunts, finally free from the door. "Seriously?" Kai asked. Kai goes after the ninja who are in the elevator. "Black Ninja, Blue Ninja, Red Ninja, White Ninja. Gold and Silver Ninja not identified. Wait for action," the Computer said. The ninja arrive at the 100th floor. "I would've guessed ninja to sneak in a window, not use the elevator," Borg said. "Ah! Oh my gosh! Are you– are you–?" Jay asked excitedly. "Cyrus Borg? Yes. Unfortunately, when my parents gave me a name like that, my future in technology was predetermined," Borg said. Jay chuckles. Borg then says he called the ninja up to thank them for saving the city, giving them a statue of himself. However as they are leaving Borg pulls Kai aside telling him that they have to protect "them" with their lives.

The ninja then bring the statue into the elevator, but they drop it and it breaks, revealing the techno blades and new ninja uniforms. "Techno blades located. Apprehend. Assailants, please stand down and drop the Techno blades," The computer orders. "Ok, first we're pedestrians, and now we're assailants?" Cole questioned. "Guy's these must be the Techno Blades," Kai said, "We have to protect them with our lives." "Have it your way, goodbye," The computer said, dropping the ninja towards the ground at high speed. The ninja luckily escape into an elevator going up right next to theirs and get their new ninja suits on before escaping Borg Tower. When the ninja get out of the elevator they are attacked by Security Mechs. They try to fight them with the Techno Blades, but don't know how to activate them.

A mech then fires its rocket at the glass, breaking the window and pushing the ninja out. However, they survive after grabbing onto a hanging hose and hitting a window cleaning platform. On the platform, they get attacked by an enemy copter but before it manages to fire at them, Zane jumps on it and hacks it with the Techno blade, finding out that is how the weapons work. Zane and the ninja then help the students to the bus. "Get to the academy as fast as you can sis. We need the gold and silver ninja," Kai said. "What about you guys?" Nya asked. "We have to protect the people," Wu replied. A traffic light alternates between green and red before ultimately turning red and attacking a pedestrian. A man starts yelling. A security mech then tips over the school bus, causing everyone to yell. "I'm on it, Ninja Go!" Cole said, using spinjitzu to jump over the bus and rip out the mech's power cords. "No one calls me pedestrian!" Cole said. "Alright so these Techno blades can hack into their systems," Kai said. "So what do you say we do a little hack attack?" Jay asked. "Kai and Zane, you take to the skies. I want Cole and Jay on the ground. And I will do what I can for the people," Wu said.

Kai jumps on Zane's copter and hacks an enemy aeroplane, turning it into the Kai Fighter and flying high above the city. He then hears a pre-recorded message from Borg, explaining that they discovered a virus laying dormant in their systems a few weeks prior, the Overlord. He also says that they have to get the Techno blades out of the city, as once he knows they have them he will never let them leave. After that, Kai lands to pick up Wu, but they get surrounded by more Security mechs. At the last moment, Lloyd and Ophelia arrive on the Golden and Silver Dragons, Lloyd's powers instantly defeating the robots. "Robots vs ninja, dare I ask?" Lloyd joked. "You two are a sight for sore eyes," Kai said. "So, you couldn't help yourself, Golden ninja. And the Silver ninja. We meet again," The Overlord said over a TV screen. "Overlord, we defeated you once, we'll defeat you again," Lloyd said. "Oh, I don't want to fight, I just want your power!" The Overlord said, the mechs sucking in the golden power and reactivating. Lloyd tries to fight them again. "No Lloyd, our powers are only making them stronger," Ophelia said. "But then how do we fight?" Lloyd asked, frustrated. "We don't, we need to get you and the Techno blades out of the city," Kai said. "And like this," Ophelia said, using the power of the First spinjitzu Master to raise the earth and crush a few mechs, shocking the ninja, "Your father taught me that," she said to Lloyd. "Yeah, well even with that I don't think he'll let us leave," Cole said. "I have a plan, but I don't have much time to explain. Listen closely," Wu said, explaining his plan.

"I hope this works," Kai said. "At 4.2 percent chance of success, I'd say our hope is slim," Zane replied. "That's why it's called hope, Zane," Jay said. "Techno blades, 92 percent conformation," the Computer said looking at Wu. "The sensei, the sensei has them," The Overlord said. Wu is panting as he runs away. Seeing he is surrounded by hover copters he reveals that there is nothing beneath the cloth. "No, no, no! Where are the blades?" The Overlord asks, rewinding the footage to see Wu dropping the blades into Kai's fighter as he ran. "The old fool will pay dearly!" The Overlord declared. "We have to go back for him," Lloyd said. "We will, but only once you are safe," Kai said. "He wants these weapons, and for some reason, he also wants you Lloyd. Remember this was Sensei's plan. They can't break him," Cole said. "Yesterday is gone, tomorrow is yet to come. We need to worry about today," Zane said. "You said it Zane," Jay agreed. "We will come back to New Ninjago City, and when we do we'll be ready," Zane said. "But until then, we find some place safe to hide, they'll be looking for us," Kai said. "I know the perfect place. No cameras, no technology. Garmadon will be able to help," Ophelia said as the ninja sped away from the city.
