It has been a long and turbulent time for humanity, their home world Earth has been consumed with wars and fighting for the past fifty years. The death toll increased with every passing day until the remaining human populace almost wiped themselves out completely.
At the height of their existence, they numbered in the region of eight billion people. At one point they were well on their way to taking their destiny to the stars, they had space faring vehicles and had visited other planets in their Solar System. However, war and greed set back humanities efforts to find other habitable planets and virtually destroyed them all.
Today, on the eve of the next galactic step, humanity numbers just fifty thousand people, after destroying most of their population in a great series of wars. Massive terrible battles and conflicts that eventually ended with one massive almighty holocaust. A disaster, which wiped out over ninety per cent of the populace and made almost eighty-five per cent of the planet's surface uninhabitable.
Surprisingly even after the holocaust, the humans wanted to fight each other, because they were angry, fearful and full of revenge. Yet, eventually one person decided to stand up for peace, using the power of human speech and diplomacy, he got the people to stop fighting each other and look back towards the stars for a new way of life out in the space above.
Humanity now had a new constructive goal that did not involve killing each other, to find a new home in the blackness of space. They had almost succeeded in destroying their own home but maybe one day they might even find a way to restore their ruined home planet.
Humanities strengths are its resilience and its determination to succeed, and thanks to its years of war, this race has high technological advancements in weaponry. Their biggest weakness however, is that they are mistrustful and easily prone to infighting. Humans tend to look for personal gain and glory more than working towards the greater good of their race.
Their planet has been greatly wounded by all the conflicts and in the aftermath of the great wars, they are struggling even to feed the few remaining survivors that are left. The huge loss of life has somehow though not affected humanities industrial and scientific abilities, no loss of knowledge has occurred, but the techniques they have learned are all to do with weapons, armour and other destructive tools. No real growth has been achieved in the fields of agriculture and medicine, the only great advancement in these areas is gene-manipulation, but this too was aimed more at creating living, breathing weapons.
So how can a race that has all but ruined itself, start a new chapter of its evolution and move out into the cosmos? How can a race that is so mistrustful and so aggressive hope to compete with the other races that are out there waiting to meet them? Is it possible that humanity will be the race that wins the Colony Wars?
