Tom was a farmer who lived on the outskirts of a small town in Canada. He had dogs, cats, ducks, geese, pigs, and sheep.

His daily routine was always the same: he would go for a run right after waking up. Upon returning, he would choose an animal from his livestock and leave it prepared to later eat for lunch. He would take a bath and put on comfortable clothes. After that, he would have a light breakfast—eggs, bread with jam, and honey tea. And when he finished, he would begin to work.

Tom was a very active young man and was in good shape. He was single and thriving as a farmer.

One evening, while watching the hockey game, he heard the beak of a goose knocking on his door. Tom ignored it for a few minutes until the noise began to irritate him. "I'll cook that goose for dinner," he thought, annoyed.

When he opened the door, it was not a goose but a woman who had interrupted his game. She was attractive and younger than Tom. Her nails against the door sounded like a desperate bird trying to enter Tom's house.

"Excuse me, sir," she said in a timid voice, "I'm new in town, and I still can't find a job. Would you be so kind to share some food with me? As soon as I start working, I'll repay the favor with the money I receive."

Tom was selfish. Not even the most beautiful woman in the world, nor the most noble cause, would have convinced him to share. After a cold, resounding "No!" he slammed the door in front of the woman's face.

He returned to his room, laid down again, and continued watching television. When he finished, he took a fork and ate the last few bites of the stew containing the meat he had cooked earlier that day. He then went to sleep.
