Engfa sat in her car parked right at the edge of a cliff in the middle of the night. Pitch black, no lights. Myriads of emotions assaulted her senses. She felt hopelessly bleak like the world was coming down on her. Starting the car, she had the mind to drive off the cliff but sat back thinking about how all her sacrifices would be for naught. Shifting the gear back into reverse, she drove off leaving a cloud of dirt in the air behind her. Peddle to the metal with a hundred on the dash. Along the way she made calls, several of them. So much to do in so little time. This marked undercurrents to an otherwise pond of still waters.
Roughly 4 hours later the last phone call was done as dawn fast approached.
Quit holding back. Traditions are fundamentally peer pressure from the dead who weren't here to stop her from living life to the fullest. That's what Engfa thought. She quickly browsed flight tickets and bought one that would leave at 8 in the morning giving herself space to freshen up and get a bite. A pre packed suitcase was on standby as usual for her travels. After a quick shower and going through her walk-in closet, she got a set of black smart casual pants and white button up paired with black loafers. One less thing to worry about when you look good in anything.Engfa headed downstairs and the aroma from her laid out breakfast wafted to her. She failed to remember the last time she had real food. Perks of getting out of a slump? Getting your appetite back, so Engfa wolfed down her breakfast pretty quick. Bless her Chef's heart. It was wonderful and borderline blissful. Engfa drove herself to the airport with little to no thoughts. She felt nothing in comparison to a few hours ago. All she knew was, she was going home.
Or at least she hoped it still was. That was for her mother to know and for Engfa to find out. After boarding the plane she used music to tune out the rest of the world and hoped for an uneventful flight. She got comfortable to get herself some shut eye in her business class suite.
Engfa stirred awake right on time for her meals. Plane food would forever be bland to her. Would not rate it. The rest of the flight was spent catching up on her email tasks and documents she had to go through before giving the go ahead as she happened to be the C.E.O of the Waraha group. It was quite a big corporate umbrella. Everybody wanted to profit off its shadow. She diverted all her calls to her secretary Nesa.
Nesa had been working as her secretary for over 4 years now. A text message from Nesa confirmed cancellation and postponement of some prior commitments, where need be, delegation was done. This would only be for two weeks maximum then Engfa was required to deal with the backlog and play catch up. Fair enough.
Touchdown. Midnight in Bangkok.
The atmosphere once outside the airport was packed with so much nostalgia that came rushing back at her. Engfa called a cab and headed over to her hotel she had already booked. The room had quite the view, a breathtaking one at that. The skyline over the concrete jungle was highlighted by the city lights. It felt so good to be back. Engfa rushed to get a shower before jet lag really hit and then retired in her bed."What do you mean she is back. Last night? Where? Are you sure about that? I need proof Heidi. What hotel? Got it."
The line went dead immediately.
Charlotte was stuck in a daze.
"You're finally here. You're home. Wait up for me."
She grabbed her car keys and excitedly drove to the hotel and straight up headed to the breakfast lounge for the guests. Nobody inhibits your way when you are the owner of a 5 star hotel."Porridge and sour mangoes. You didn't change one bit, huh." Charlotte stared at Engfa taking in everything about her, she had in fact grown more beautiful but leaner. Mindlessly, she picked up a tray and got herself breakfast too. Her employees were at their wits end. Why would their boss have normal lounge food? Why were they not notified to prepare her food?
"May I have a seat at your table?"
"Yeah, you're welcome." Engfa answered without looking up but froze when she found that voice awfully familiar. She looked up so fast her neck would have suffered a whiplash. Eye contact with Charlotte who had a smirk on her face
"You're beautiful." The words came rushing out of Engfa's mouth before she could stop herself.
"You don't look so bad yourself." Charlotte laughed. On autopilot Engfa rose to engulf Charlotte in her embrace. Charlotte hugged her tighter and closer. "Charlotte..." Engfa trailed. "Finally my love. I have been waiting for you." Charlotte whispered in Engfa's ear whose eyes were pooled with tears. Engfa felt overwhelmed.
"Wanna go someplace quiet, less prying eyes?""Beautiful."
"You have spoken of this word five times in the last ten minutes. Did I break you?" Charlotte raised an eyebrow and sat across Engfa in the dining area of the penthouse suite of the hotel. Engfa's ears became beet red signifying her shyness. "Did I lie though?" She replied in a rare surge of courage.
"No, you never lie to me." Silence."Speaking of lies, don't you have some omitted truths you need to fill in from the last time that I saw you? I am supposed to be mad at you Engfa Waraha."
Uh oh. Not the government official names.
"Pray tell. Shed some light my way." A brilliant smile hung on Charlotte's lips with mirth in her eyes. Engfa knew she was done for but in that very moment all she saw was the love of her life.
"Engfa, snap out of it!"
"Huh?! Yeah, sorry." Engfa's IQ tended to plummet to amoeba level around Charlotte.
"We're here in the present. Make the most of it." Charlotte huffed while taking a sip of her iced americano that happened to be too sweet for her liking.
"From the top?" Engfa questioned Charlotte.
"Go for it. You have my full attention." Charlotte sat back staring at Engfa.
"We're going to be here for a while then." Engfa cleared her throat and sat straight.
