7 - Mud

I rummage through all the cabinets in the kitchen before coming to the conclusion that going to get groceries could not be put off any longer. We've all been so wrapped up in spending time together since I moved back home, that the daily tasks were being forgotten. I decided today would be a good day for me to help out my mom while she was out visiting Sue Clearwater.

I leave a note on the counter for my mom to see when she returns home.

I slip on a pair of shoes and making my way to my little beat up Ford Bronco. It was nice to be able to drive again, taking taxis and walking did not bother me, but there was something about rolling the windows down, smelling the fresh rain, and singing my heart out.

The store was not far from the house, close enough to walk to. There was a actually trail beside my house that came out next to the store, Jacob and I used to spend all of our time out there, building forts, and climbing trees, and it was safer to walk down that path than it was to walk alongside the road. I'll make the time to walk down it and reminisce another day, today I needed to feel the wind in my hair.

I crank the volume knob on the radio up, beginning my drive to the store, deciding to take a long drive before actually heading to the store. My windows-down singing session was cut short by the sound of heavy raindrops on my windshield. It was fun while it lasted, I think to myself, rolling the windows up, and turning the heat on slightly to rid the interior of my truck from the slight chill.

I was only a couple miles away from the beach, when I slammed my foot down on the brakes, jerking the wheel slightly to avoid hitting the massive animal.

I couldn't believe my eyes, a flash of light zoomed across the road, followed by a wolf. Well something that resembled a wolf, it was more the size of a horse, with dark gray fur.

Unfortunately the fact that I hadn't drove in almost two years, joined with the massive amounts of rain that LA Push seems to get, shoulder of the road was slick with water, causing the car barreled into a small tree that had begun growing seemly too close to the road.

I lean my head against the steering wheel, in utter embarrassment, dreading to have to call my parents to tell them I had wrecked my car.

The sound of the brakes squeeling attracts the attention of the wolf, it whimpering as he stood on the other side of the road.

I look up in the direction of the whimpering, managing to lock eyes with the massive creature. Time standing still for a moment, the wolf howls loudly, cause me to jump slightly.

"Are you okay?" I call out, as the wolf whimpers. The wolf let's out another whine, before quickly running off.

I step out the car to access the damage, not much body damage from the impact against the tree, but it was definitely stuck in the mud. I sigh, standing in the rain, thinking to myself of who to call.

I quickly rummage around the carnage of the interior of my truck. The sudden jerk of the wheel had sent my bag flying. I search for my phone, unable to find it.

As if perfect timing my phone began to ring. I move my jacket out of the floorboard, to retreive the ringing phoen from under it.

"Hello?" I answer, putting the phone to my ear.

"Juliette?" Jacobs voice was breathless and frantic.

"Jacob! I was just going to call you, you think you could come rescue me?"

"What's going on?" He asks, seemly more calm than he was only a moment before. "I- well- I swerved to miss a...dog."

"A dog?" Jacob asks questionably, it clear he did not believe me.

I laugh, "A dog, a wolf, it was just something huge. My car is stuck in mud now. I just need to pull it out."

"I'll be there with Jared in a minute."

"How do you even know where I -?" My question is interrupted by the clicking sound of Jacob hanging up on me.

I stand there, phone still in hand, slightly confused by Jacob's abrupt hang-up. But I shake it off and focus on the task at hand. I walk around the car, assessing the situation and realizing that I won't be able to get it out of the mud on my own.

As I wait for Jacob and Jared to arrive, I take a moment to admire the beauty of the surrounding area. The rain has stopped, leaving behind a fresh, earthy scent. The trees sway gently in the breeze, and the sound of birds chirping fills the air. It's moments like these that remind me why I love this small town so much.

Before long, I see Jacob's familiar red truck pulling up behind my car. He jumps out, followed by Jared, who I recognize as one of Jacob's friends. They both have concerned expressions on their faces as they approach me. My concern was the fact that neither of them had shirts on, and Jared looked completely different than he did the last time I had seen him. I decide to chalk up the difference in appearance to the fact that I've been gone for two years.

"Hey, Juliette. Are you okay?" Jacob asks, his voice filled with genuine worry.

"Yeah, I'm fine. Just a little shaken up. Thanks for coming to help," I reply, grateful for their assistance.

"No problem. Let's take a look at the car and see what we can do," Jared chimes in, his voice calm and reassuring.

Together, the three of us assess the situation and come up with a plan. Jacob and Jared attach a tow rope to my car while I guide them from behind the wheel. With a bit of effort and teamwork, they manage to pull my car out of the mud and onto solid ground.

I let out a sigh of relief as I step out of the car, grateful that the ordeal is over. "Thank you both so much. I don't know what I would have done without you."

Jacob nods, leaning against his truck,  "Well, you know we're always here to save the day."

Jared smiles, his eyes sparkling with mischief. "Just don't make a habit out of getting your car stuck, okay?"

I playfully roll my eyes at him. "I'll try my best. But no promises."

We all share a laugh before Jared speaks up. "Well, now that your car is free, what do you say we head back to Sams? You can follow us...I'm sure you could use a hot cup of coffee after all this."

I nod in agreement, realizing just how cold and damp I feel after the accident. "That sounds perfect. Lead the way."

"Wait, you hang out with Sam now?" I ask Jacob, hesitating before getting into the driver's seat of my truck.

"Sam's cool. Trust me. You'll get to meet his Fiancé, and Leah is even there."

I nod, unsure if going to Sams was truly something I wanted to do...Surely I can not sit in the house alone forever and if Leah is over there then he must be fine to be around now...

"Alright, lead the way !" I shout as Jacob's truck roars to life.
