My Mom wakes me up from bed saying "Melissa! You're going to be late for school!" "Coming!" I say. Of all the days I had to wake up late I chose this one. Hello! I'm Melissa and I'm the new girl. After moving a lot my family chose this place to live. Missouri. Who even knows about Missouri! I also don't really know the fashion styles here. What do 15 year-olds like me wear these days!? I'll just put on this shirt, these pants, and some jewelry. I just gotta put one leg in and then the other... WHAM! Bad idea... While laying down flat on the ground I saw something underneath my dresser.
I looked underneath and found a strange amulet. The amulet was a unique artifact, it had the appearance of a smooth black gemstone hanging from a simple silver chain. It was about two inches wide and had a dull metallic sheen to it. Written on the surface of the amulet in ancient runes was the word "Flux". "Mellissa!" My Mom says. No time to worry about that now! I put the amulet in my pocket and go downstairs.
I go downstairs to hear my Mom say "Eat your breakfast quickly! The bus will be here very soon!" I eat my breakfast and just barely make it on the bus. This school is bigger than the last school I've been to. With halls that look like they stretch for miles. I go to my first block which is study hall, I always pick study hall. Second block is History so I go there next. For this one I have to pay attention! "Today" My History teacher says, "We have a new student. Mellissa, can you tell us a bit about yourself?" I nervously stand in front of everybody. "Hi. My name is Mellissa..." Suddenly someone whispers: "Mellissa? Sounds like the name of an old crone!" Which hurt so I said to the teacher: "Can I go to the restroom?" I just need to blow off some steam.
While I am in the restroom I feel something in my pocket. I take it out and It's the amulet. I think it looks nice so I go to the mirror and I put it on. I see the amulet faintly glow and then I hear a voice. "Mellissa!" I turn around but no one is there. "Who's there?" Suddenly the amulet I'm wearing starts floating. "I am Flux, a magical amulet created to serve mankind. I have been in your family for years, Mell!" This can't be real! "It is." You can hear my thoughts!? "I most certainly can! I am magic after all." Soon I realize it's time to go back to class. "Well, Flux It's been fine but I think I must go now." "Wait! Don't take me off! I can just hide under your shirt!" "Okay... But I need to go now."
The rest of the school day was normal. Well as normal as it can be with a magic amulet under my shirt. When I get home I immediately rush to my room and close the door. Then I take the amulet out from under my shirt. "Thank you, Mellissa! Now the real adventures can begin!" "What kind of adventures?" I said. Suddenly, Flux started glowing.

"Adventures to make the world a better place, of course!" Flux said. "Let's go see!" Suddenly, Flux pulled me to one of my open windows. "Wait!" I screamed, "What are you doing!?" "We are going to help people. We can't help anyone in here!" "But if you go through the window, I'll fall!" "No you won't!" Flux said, "I can use my magic to make us fly!" Unexpectedly, I started to float off the ground and out the window. I was off!
