hospital beds
The soft hum of the hospital air conditioner was accompanied by the occasional distant beep of medical equipment. Shubman lay still on the hospital bed, pale and weak, his cricket dreams momentarily suspended. The room, though sterile, bore witness to the pulse of a different kind of competition— the World Cup fever that gripped the nation.
Nandhini sat on the hard bench, her eyes scanning the pages of a novel she was pretending to read. She wore a worried expression, her thoughts shifting between her brother's ongoing match and Shubman's health. The clandestine nature of her relationship with Shubman added an extra layer of tension to the air.
As Nandhini turned a page, the calm was shattered by a sudden fit of coughing from Shubman. Startled, she slammed the book shut and hurried to his side, concern etched across her face. She handed him a glass of water, watching him drink with a mix of empathy and helplessness.
"Easy, Shubman. It's just a rough patch, you'll be back on the field in no time," she reassured him, placing the glass back on the bedside table. Shubman managed a weak smile, grateful for her presence.
"Thanks, Nandhini. Can you do me a favour?"
"Of course, anything," she replied, her eyes reflecting sincerity. Shubman shifted a little, creating a small space on the bed. "Come, sit with me for a while."
Nandhini hesitated for a moment before complying, carefully settling herself next to him. Their proximity spoke volumes about the unspoken bond they shared. She looked at him with concern, the World Cup forgotten for the moment. As they sat in the hushed hospital room, the buzz of the cricket season outside seemed distant. The conversation shifted from the upcoming matches to more personal topics.
Shubman spoke about his passion for the game, and Nandhini shared stories about growing up with Shreyas, her brother, and the pranks they played on each other.
Time seemed to stand still as they laughed and shared anecdotes, cocooned in the small hospital room. The World Cup may have been in full swing outside, but in that moment, the only match that mattered was the quiet, intimate connection between Shubman and Nandhini.
Amidst the laughter and shared stories, Shubman felt a welcomed distraction from the relentless thoughts of the World Cup. Nandhini skillfully steered the conversation towards lighter topics, recalling about their shared experiences, childhood memories, and the quirky habits of their teammates.
Just as the warmth of their connection enveloped the hospital room, the door creaked open, and in walked two familiar faces— Ishan and Virat. Ishan's mischievous grin and Virat's mischievous grin filled the room, momentarily causing Shubman and Nandhini to exchange a surprised glance.
"How are you holding up, Shubman? Nandhini, good to see you here." Virat smiled. Shubman managed a weak smile, touched by the unexpected visit. "I'm hanging in there, thanks. And Nandhini has been here, providing moral support."
Nandhini chuckled, feeling the sudden scrutiny from Ishan and Virat. Ishan, always the observant one, raised an eyebrow. "Well, well, what do we have here? A secret meeting in the hospital quarters?"
Virat chuckled, sensing the tension. "Relax, you two. We're not here to interrogate."
Ishan, ever the energetic one, pulled a small Bluetooth speaker from his backpack. "How about some music to lighten the mood? I've got Shreyas' playlist – guaranteed to lift spirits!"
"A playlist which I only made," Nandhini chuckles making Ishan scratch his head.
As the familiar tunes filled the room, the atmosphere transformed. Ishan's funny dance moves made everyone laugh. The world outside, with its World Cup battles and anxieties, momentarily faded away.
The unexpected visit from Ishan and Virat not only lifted Shubman's spirits but also brought a sense of normalcy to the confined space. As the conversation flowed and the music played on, the hospital room became a haven, shielded from the pressures of the World Cup and the worries of the cricketing world.
