Alex

I grab a cup and pour myself coffee. Black. Double.

"Hard week?" A doctor smiles at me before pouring herself some coffee.

"Longer than I planned." I say it with a laugh, offering her some sugar, but she shakes her head.

"We're going to need a lot more of this to survive the day." The blonde doctor notices my confused face, so she quickly adds. "Oh, I thought you knew, we need extra help tonight. They've set up some extra break rooms if you need a moment, but we need as many residents as we can, a lot of doctors are out on conferences or internships."

"I understand, no problem," I say, unable to say anything else in the face of my position as a resident.

"If you can let your team know, all the better, maybe the notifications haven't traveled as fast as they should."

I nod and say goodbye to her as the device on her waistband begins to beep.

I finish my coffee and throw the disposable cup in the trash. I find someone on my team and tell them what the doctor has said, so they can help me tell everyone.

I grab my cell phone after making sure no one is watching. I typed a quick message, hoping that this time she would see it.

"Alex! I need help here!" I ran out after hearing my superior's shout.

My eyes close as soft music begins to play on the radio. The cab driver hums the lyrics. I watch the houses go by. The overtime has completely wrecked me, but the thought of getting home and sleeping makes my eyes try with all their might to stay open.

I get out of the car, saying goodbye to the gentleman. I look at my phone but find it completely black. I didn't plan to stay so long in the hospital, I didn't think the low battery wouldn't be enough.

I walk towards the door but stop halfway. When I see a small body sitting in the doorway.

Her exposed legs are holding her arms, and her head is hidden. His breathing is so calm, and despite the awkward pose, she looks like she is sleeping so soundly.

I sigh. I can't even imagine what time it is. At least it hasn't rained today, and the night is rather warm.

"Char." I whisper, kneeling before her, moaning a little from the pain in my body. "Char, wake up."

The little girl lifts her head, disoriented, but gives me a small smile.

"What am I texting you for if you don't read them?" I ask a little reproachfully, thinking back to last week, which was nothing short of pneumonia.

"I thought I could come over and talk you into going out like last time." she says, running her hand through her hair, trying to shake off the sleep.

"Didn't you see that no one was home? How long have you been here?" I ask, grabbing her arms and helping to pull her up.

I can't help but look at her, she is wearing a red dress, shorter than she has ever worn, and her small breasts stick out more, as if the dress is not her size.

There has been no response from her.

"Come, I'll take you home." I say, and she looks at me with a frown.

Her hand reaches up and touches my chest, touching the white gown that has some red stains on it.

I take her hand, pulling it away from my dirty clothes.

"Are you coming from work?" she asks, and I nod. Still with my hand on hers, I make sure it's not stained.

"I had to work overtime, sorry I couldn't tell you in the message." Char shakes her head, as if she wants to apologize for coming.

"I'll go home on my own," she says, letting go of my hand, but I take her arm.

"How will you go home?" I ask. "Let me drive you." Char walks over to me and looks into my tired eyes.

She lifts her hand and puts her palm on my cheek, her warm touch makes me lie a little on her.

"You're tired, don't worry, I'll call a cab. Go to sleep." Char drops her hand, pulling away from me.

"Your phone." My words make her stop. Char turns around with a frown. I walk over to her, take the cell phone from her hand, and put in my number. I left myself a missed call. "There, maybe if I call you, I can keep you from coming over when no one's here."

Char smiles.

"That won't stop me."
