Season 13. Age 11. heart in a headlock.

weeks one and two. Charlotte stretches herself across the couch; jo had been sent home from her shift as she had worked nearly thirty six hours, marking the first time the roommates had been able to talk since seeing alex after amelia's 'housewarming party.'
jo lowers herself beside the child who arches one eyebrow inquisitively. "are you ever gonna tell me what alex did that made you kick him out?"
jo cracks an amused smile. "i did not kick him out, charlie."
"i'm eleven, not stupid." charlotte retorts smartly. "the friend he's staying with is meredith grey, who he sees literally every day at work. the only reason he'd need to stay with someone who lives one block over would be if there was drama."
jo rolls her eyes, masking her impress with the child's detection skills. "there's no drama." she catches the look on charlottes face and exhales. "okay, fine. but you don't need to worry about it, alright?" the last thing jo wants is for charlie to see alex differently; he was her rescuer, after all.
there's a knock on the front door just as charlotte goes to retort and jo smiles gratefully. "can you get that?"
the child rolls her eyes but climbs off the couch nonetheless. she heaves open the heavy door to reveal stephanie and leah, two of jo's co-residents. charlotte liked doctor edward's fine; it was murphy she felt unsure of. she arches a suspicious eyebrow at the guests and questions their presence. "why?"
"we have pizza." stephanie holds up a greasy cardboard box.
Behind her, Leah holds up a six-pack. "And liquid encouragement."
Charlotte narrows her eyes. "Why?"
"Because your roommate hasn't been fun since two thousand nine and we're staging an intervention," Stephanie deadpans.
Charlotte considers this. "What kind of pizza?"
"Half pepperoni, half mushroom. And there's gossip," Stephanie added, her tone lowering into something delightfully conspiratorial.
That did it. Charlotte stepped aside, tugging on Jo's sleeve as she let them in. "You should've led with the gossip."
Jo laughed under her breath, watching her pint-sized roommate shuffle back toward the kitchen. "Where's Warren?" she asked the other two residents.
"he's married to the chief, so he is not to be trusted." stephanie remarks. "i didn't invite him."
"yeah, edward's wants to have some sort of weird strategy session." leah hands a beer to jo who perches herself on the bed.
