Idiotic. Irrational. Downright preposterous is what I would call this so-called 'plan'. After a long night sleeping on an itchy couch, I was now on my way with not three, but now four strangers to what most would see as a suicide mission. The train station was across town, so we all followed Owen as he studied the map on his screen that led us there.
The station wasn't as packed as it usually was in the bigger communities. I see a small family handing their tickets over to houseguards and undergoing mirac checks. Each person has their blood drawn and it goes into a little device, if it glows green, they're good to go, if it's red... well.
All of them are green and happily board the train. Owen guides us behind a building where we can still see the boarding station, his eyes fly to Fritz. "All you're doing is distracting them," he explains, "Talk their ear off."
Fritz sarcastically salutes at Owen like a soldier and walks behind a tree, when he comes out, he's a much older man in a houseguard uniform. We all watch him as he goes up to the group of houseguards. My heart skips a beat when the men first see Fritz. I see Fritz wave at them and say something that makes them laugh. I realized I was holding a breath and exhaled in relief.
"Let's go," Blythe says, grabbing Brim's hand. Owen and I pursue after them and we sneak toward one of the bullet train's doors. Fritz has the houseguards with their backs turned so it was the perfect opportunity. As we approached the doors, they began to shut right in front of us.
"Shit," Owen says.
My heart drops and we look over to Fritz, his eyes go from the houseguards to us and they catch him looking behind them. The four guards turn around to see the three of us and begin walking towards us.
"Stay cool," Blythe says.
I swallow in fear as the group of men approach us. Each time their heavy black boots crunch against the dead leaves beneath them, my heartbeat grows quicker. I had my hood up and tried to keep my head down so they couldn't see who I was.
The men are finally a mere few feet away from us and I dig my hands into the pockets of my jacket to hide their trembling. "You folks got tickets?" one guard says. We all stay quiet for a moment and the man looks impatient.
"I checked them in earlier, Amiel," Fritz says, his voice sounding completely different. He really was an entirely different person. The guard who I can only assume is Amiel squints his eyes at us. His gaze goes from each of us until his eyes land on me. I kept my head down but I suppose something about me stuck out.
"Take your hood off," Amiel says. My breath hitches and I stay still. His patience wears thin and he raises his voice. "Take the damn hood off!"
I cringe and lift my hands to the hem of my hood. The cold only made them tremble even more. I tried to think about any way we could get out of this, and then it came to me. When I took my hood off, the man's expression became one of shock as if he'd recognized me immediately. Good thing it wasn't long until my hand was pointed at him and my eyes were glowing their golden glow.
"You will let us on, you won't question us."
His jaw falls agape and the other houseguards go for their guns, but Owen immediately restrains them by tying roots around their wrists.
Amiel slowly walks over to the door in a trance, raises a key card to the little padlock on the side of it, and lets us in.
Everyone goes in but I wait and use my abilities on the other guards to forget about what just happened.
When I'm satisfied, Fritz uses the key card he stole from Amiel to shut the door. We found a small, comfortable booth on the train to sit in since it was going to be a long trip. Fritz made sure we had our own car to ourselves so we wouldn't be bothered by any more guards. When the coast was clear, he had turned back into his old self.
