chapter one
happy hunger games

"Happy Hunger Games, Mrs. Snow."

Avery's lip quivered as she nodded politely. "Happy Hunger Games."

The Snow mansion was buzzing with more noise than usual, and the First Lady of Panem wasn't particularly happen about it. People flooded every corner. Every time she thought she escaped their eye, someone would come up to her.

A man laughed as he consumed his eighth glass of wine. "That Snow- he's a genius!"

His arm uncomfortably gripped Avery's shoulder. "Both of you are really lucky to have each other."

Avery just nodded once again before vanishing up the white stairs. It felt like the staircase was never going to end. The hallways felt like a void as she searched for her and Coriolanus's room.

She collapsed onto the velvet colored bed and had no concern for her new dress getting wrinkled. Avery felt a tear slip of out her eye and wanted to scold herself for it.

The Hunger Games proceeded on, even though they are sick and a children-killing system. She couldn't stop it, instead Avery was forced to encourage it.

Her and Coriolanus are in control over Panem and the games themselves, but because of Snow's love for the games, they are the Hunger Games' biggest supporters.

Avery was promised power as First Lady, but she received none. Panem was a victim held in place by a laser pointer that Coriolanus Snow was holding. Avery was included, even though she shouldn't be.

The loudness continued downstairs, and seemed to be getting louder despite Avery closing the door. She peered over her shoulder just to learn that the door was indeed open.

Coriolanus Snow stood in the doorway in his velvet colored suit. A white rose was clipped onto it, and it matched the white rose pendant on Avery's necklace. He had gifted her it years ago when all of this just began.

"My rose."

His voice still sent chills down Avery's spine. Back in District 12, the feelings she got from him were just mere butterflies. It was innocent and giddy love. Now she felt trapped in his gaze and affection.

"Coryo."

Avery didn't see him as her once innocent nickname for him. Coriolanus professed his love for the nickname Coryo, so she continued to call him it. He told her that only the most important person in his life is aloud to call him that.

"What are you doing up here? He came closer to the bed she was resting on. "Missing my company?"

Coriolanus smirked, tucking a strand of her brunette hair behind her ears. Avery felt like prey in his presence. He wanted to devour her whole, but she kept that spark of resistance within her despite being married to the president of Panem.

She would never agree with the games, and she would never respect Coriolanus the way she once did. Avery would never feel the same about his touch.

Coriolanus noticed her uneasiness when he touched her. Everything has been a downward spiral lately. Coriolanus keeps becoming more and more power hungry, and Avery isn't sure whether she is ok being his prisoner anymore.
