Ive been driving in my car for hours to get back home to Ridgewood. The greenery around me was covered in snow, and I turned on the heater to keep myself warm. The smell of my lukewarm black coffee is filling the air. Although the journey is long, it will be worth it to finally reach home.
After graduating from school, I received an email from my mom inviting me back home for New Year. I haven't seen my parents since The Incident. My skin grows cold every time I think back to that dreadful night.
Im thrilled to be out finally and reunited with my family after years of separation. Specifically, I'm excited to see my big brother, Luther, whom I affectionately call Lulu.
Lulu and I have been in regular contact with each other, more than ever with my parents since I was locked up. At first, I could hear concern and sadness in his voice every time I picked up my phone, but now it seems like we've returned to how things were before.
More or less.
He always diverted my attention by talking about his latest activities and the current news in Ridgewood. He even mentioned a new friend he made while I was away.
Mason Clearwater.
I don't know a lot about him, but I do know that he moved to Ridgewood shortly after I left. He's a member of the college football team along with my brother, and he's not much of a party-goer. It's usually Lulu who convinces him to leave their dorm room. Oh, and hes from Ridgewood as well.
When I get home, the mystery that is Mason Clearwater will finally end because Lulu and Mason are driving to Ridgewood to spend New Year with us.
"I half expected you to go to a party and make out with someone," I joked with Lulu over the Bluetooth in my car.
And miss welcoming you back home after four years in solitary. I dont think so, Lala. I cringe at his nickname for me.
I hate when you call me that.
Well, I hate when you call me Lulu.
I smile at our sibling bickering, reminiscing about the days when we were younger. Despite the constant quarrels, it was our way of expressing our love for each other. I missed those moments dearly while I was away. As I shake my head, I try to lock away the upsetting memories of The Institute and shift my focus back to Lulu.
As I drove carefully on the icy road, I asked "When will you and Mason be there? I can't wait to see you both."
The heavy snowfall obscures my vision.
"I'm already home," he said, making my eyes bulge.
"When did you get there?" I asked, slowing down.
Yesterday. Mom and Dad wanted to do something before you returned," I frown at the mention of them.
Millions of thoughts raced through my head. How will they react? Will things be the same again just like with Lulu? Are they going to start watching me? Will they look at me the same again?
"What are you planning?" I ask.
"You'll find out when you get here," he replies with smugness. I roll my eyes.
As I approach Ridgewood, my heart sinks at the sight of a massive pile of snow blocking the access route.
"Shoot!" I exclaimed as I slammed my hand onto the steering wheel.
Whats going on Lala?
I should have left earlier. Theres a mountain of snow blocking the road to Ridgewood, I sigh.
Damn, isnt there another road you can take? Lulu asks.
No, this is the only road in and out of Ridgewood. I hear him cuss under his breath. Theres a diner not too far back. Maybe I can wait there for the storm to calm down and the roads to open.
