SOPHIE TEDDY CARTER HAS ALWAYS LOVED TO SING. Whether it was a result of her inheriting the powers of a siren from her parents, growing up listening to her mother singing around the house, or listening to different ABBA songs, she didn't know. But she loved it so much so, that her mother used to joke around, telling anyone who cared to listen that Sophie learned to sing before she could talk.

The joke, of course, was not heard by many considering, up until they moved to Beacon Hills when Sophie was fourteen, Poppy and Sophie Bennett were loners. It was a clear result of Holden Bennet's — Sophie's biological father — emotional and physical abuse on both of them.

Even after leaving Seattle, Washington, and changing her last name to match her mother's maiden name, Sophie figured she was better off alone than trying to make friends, considering she didn't have many in Seattle.

She was independent, and she didn't mind being alone.

There were many benefits to it, like not worrying about them suddenly having a change in their personality, beating her up, or betraying her. She didn't have to worry about hanging around after school — she could do whatever she wanted, which usually led to her buying candy from the corner store before walking home to do her homework or watch a movie with her mother's fiancé, Scout Hale.

Sophie knew the second she saw her mother with Scout Hale that she was in good hands. She saw pictures of them in their youth — they were childhood best friends who stayed close until Poppy got pregnant and had to move away to stay with Sophie's biological Dad.

Although Holden Bennett was a horrible man now, he wasn't always a horrible person. Sophie could still remember when he cared, when he used to show her how to play guitar, when he used to buy Poppy flowers every week, when he used to buy her candy on his way back from work.

It was strange how quickly those thoughts faded with each sip of his beer bottle.

From then on, it was difficult to find the old Holden — and a six-year-old Sophie, oblivious and naive, simply thought her father must've had a bad day at work that stopped him from remembering her birthday. She believed his lie when he told her Poppy had fallen down the stairs and that her mother's clumsiness resulted in the bruises around her body. And she believed his words when he said she had been a bad daughter, that she had gotten in his way, that she was the sole reason his life hadn't gone the way he hoped.
