I groaned as I woke up, still getting used to sleeping on the thin mattress after nearly half a year of sleeping on a bed at school. I could hear my mother stumbling around in the kitchen. Then I heard a loud crash and a thud. Maybe if my mother was someone else, I would be worried, but I knew exactly what had happened. She had gotten so drunk that she passed out where she was standing. Again. She'd been like this since Dad had died years ago. It wasn't like she was much better before but Dad managed to make things better

I huffed and got out of bed. As expected, my mother was lying motionless on the floor of the kitchen. I called it a kitchen, but really it was one of two rooms in the house. One was the one where the mattress was, where Mum usually slept. Yesterday, she'd fallen asleep on the couch, and I slept on the mattress instead.

I made a face at the way she smelled before using magic to lift her up and place her on the sofa. I then left her a note saying that I was going to be in New York for the next three months for the dueling course. I'm not sure she'd care enough to read it though. If she even noticed, I was gone.

Technically, the course only started in a week, but who'd give up the opportunity to explore New York? Especially since I'd been saving for so long. All the money and gift cards my so-called friends had given me for birthdays, Christmas, etc., all went towards this. I was trying not to think about who had contributed the most to those. As if gifts would cover up what he'd done.

If nothing else I'd have fun spending his money.

ValentineOfTheValley: NYC here I come!

I had managed to find a decently priced hotel that didn't look too seedy. I locked and warded all my luggage before leaving it to go explore. I had one week before I had to be at the collection point where I would meet everyone else that was accepted. It was a fairly prestigious program and getting accepted was difficult as there were only six slots. I wondered what everyone else would be like.

Joust then I saw the most gorgeous dress in a shop window. It was silver and shone in the light. I stepped in to admire it before checking the price tag. It was abut 20$ and i wondered if it was worth it. I'd never really worn dresses that much because Eli said it looked like I was trying to hard. That made up my mind and I quickly bought it. Eli Hunt can think whatever he damn well wants to.

I had a list of things I wanted to try and one of them was going clubbing. I knew the dress would be perfect. Today however, was for sightseeing.
