I ran all the way to the city limits sign. I was so out of breathe. I saw a gas station right after the city limits sign. I couldnt believe it. I was crossing the city limits. I was really doing it. I walked straight to the gas station. I went in and got a water and a bag of doritos. I went to go pay for my things and I noticed that I only had $250 in my wallet. I knew I wasn't going to get far with that. I had to get to a bank or an atm.
I gave the clerk a 10 dollar bill.
"It looks like you've had a bad night" the clerk said.
"Yeah, but it could be worse" I replied as mascara rolled down my face.
After he gave me my receipt I walked off. I heard the clerk say something to the guy behind me. I felt like they were talking about me because I heard the clerk say that women should never cry or something like that.
I was slowly taking my time walking because I had no idea where I was headed. All of a sudden I heard a voice yelling at me.
"Hey ma'am", it was a very deep voice.
"Yes" I said as I turned around.
"Do you need any help getting somewhere? " he sounded concerned. "Umm, no I'm fine" I knew I wasn't, but I didn't want to cause any trouble. "Ma'am, are you sure? The next town is 4 and a half miles away and noone can walk for that long "
"I don't know you, though."
"I'm Sam and this is my little sister Alison. Now you know us," he said as the little girl popped her head up from his truck.
"I'm Shalen," I said walking closer to them.
"So, do you want a ride to where ever your going? "
"I'd like that, and thank you so much," I said as I got in his car.
We pulled out of the gas station and I had no idea where I wanted to be dropped off at. Maybe I'd just go where they we're going if it was far away from here.
