There once was a pair of twins. Their bloodline were infamous for the spirit powers they will receive at birth, the entire village came to witness the moment. A piercing scream petrified the night sky, the mother's face turned pale.
"W-what do you mean...? It cant be..."
"Without spirit powers." The cloaked man nodded, "A defective one... even I can't believe in such a curse."

That was what Whisper was told ever since. Defective. His picture-perfect mother tried so hard to cover him up, to hide him from the world, like he was never meant to be. To them, he was simply a waste of space. nothing.
His twin was his only friend, although being in the spotlight and praised by everyone for her powerful magic, she always made sure to find time to talk to Whisper. She sometimes brought small gifts for him, other times she sang, prancing around the great spirit tree, her long blue hair flowed along the breeze.
Evelynn was her name, the person he'll never become.
On his 10th birthday, his sister unexpectedly gifted him something, something so great, so "powerful" it changed his life.
Spirit orbs were something one could conjure up with great strength, it was even considered dangerous as it could allow anyone that comes in contact with it to...
"...receive the powers stored within." Evelynn smiled, the spirit orb floated beside her. Her purple eyes twinkled mysteriously.
That was the best and worst day of his life.
On that same day, Evelynn made a friend.
Whisper didn't care much, she already has too many friends for him to count, after all, she was pretty, powerful with a great personality, everyone wanted to be her. She hung out a lot with her new friend, so much to the point she almost forgot the existence of her very own twin.
Occasionally she would whisper "sorry" to him, Whisper didn't mind much, he's alright on his own, his spirit owl accompanied him as he watched the sun set every day, as he watched seasons change.

Everything is absolutely perfect for Evelynn, she did not demand much and was a pretty disciplined child. She had a good, no, great friend and a nice brother. Cathrine studied spirit magic with her, and she always had a bright smile on her face.
  Until a fight broke out.
Evelynn didn't know what was wrong with her friend, she had done everything carefully, giving her friend space when she needs, and yet she shouted at her the next day.
It was just a small fight between children, it should be alright.
Spells were casted at one another, Evelynn felt awful, she didn't know what was wrong. Confusion filled her heart, then replaced with sadness, then anger.
Villagers recalled that fight as "the most traumatic thing I have ever experienced."

Whisper witnessed the whole thing. How his sister's friend found the forbidden spell book, and casted a giant beam at his twin.
  She was different ever since.

Problems never came her way. Her body slumped onto the cold forest floor, lifeless. She sat up shakily, she caught a glimpse of the familiar-looking girl run away frantically. Was this truly her fate?
No, maybe she was too used to just get everything she wanted. She glanced at her reflection in a nearby puddle of water and winced, her left eye had completely turned blue.
  Great. Everything is ruined.
Her twin ran towards her, looking concerned.
  "Evelynn? Are you okay?"
A crowd slowly formed around her. She doesn't like it at all. She needed to escape. She drew in a sharp breath as she stood up and ran.
She had never felt this free before, wind gliding through her bright blue hair as she picked up more speed. Squirrels and birds scurried away, making way for her, she didn't know where she was running to. She just needed to escape. All the anguish, hurt and pain faded away from her body. She knew this feeling, it was described in nearly every book she had read.
  FREEDOM.
Away from everyone's attention, away from people's gasps and praises, away from her mother. She never knew how much those thibgs restrained her.
But she was free now. And she's never going back. Ever.
She stopped in the middle of a small clearing and leaned against a nearby tree, panting. She had never been this far away from home, her mother was always rambling about how easy it is to get lost in this forest, she had never gotten a chance to explore.
She stood there quietly, processing what had just happened.
The blast had nearly killed her, hitting her eye. Her eye had not been blinded, miraculously.
  But how?
she had not studied magic long enough for her to figure this out. It was painful, yes, but... there was an unexplainable feeling inside her, something completely different, like a new source of power.
She tried to take a step forward, but her legs ached, blood spewed out from her mouth as she coughed. She wiped the blood off her face.
  Is this truly the end?
She examined her surroundings, a ruined structure stood in a clearing near the tree. She furrowed her eyebrows, she had lived on the Spirit Island all her life, how could she not possibly know this? Unless her mother tried to hide all the exciting things from her. That explains it. Evelynn frowned.
Curiously, she walked closer towards the structure covered with vines, lizards scurried off the structure as she brushed the loose leaves off. Something was carved onto the structure, it wasn't anything she could read, but she could understand.. as if... she knew.
The sun was going down, the light illuminated the clearing, she knew there was no way she could return in the dark. Evelynn eyed the structure once more, she knew why it looked so... familiar. It was written on one of the library books, she had to remember...
Her body subconsciously moved forward, gently brushing the text on the structure. She knew what to do. She closed her eyes, her palms generated something else, something that was not spirit magic...
A bright glow made her shield her eyes from the structure, she slowly backed away, her eyes widening at the sight.
The structure suddenly made sense, the text glowed softly, as if beckoning her to come closer, to enter. She knew what this was, her heart sped up.
The portal connecting to the other realm
She can finally get out of here. She can finally escape the little cage she had been trapped in all her life, how in this island, she was abused for popularity and fame, how her dearest friend betrayed her.
She was not letting this happen.
A familiar voice came from behind her, "Evelynn! What are you doing here? It's already dark and-"
Whisper froze, tears silently streamed down his face as he ran towards his sister, he would forever remember how she walked into the portal, how the portal flickered off the moment his fingers reached her. She was gone. Forever. The only one that ever cared about him, disappeared right in front of him.
That was the day he had lost everything. The day everything changed.
