Everything seemed fuzzy, Mélanie's thoughts were racing. Everyone, except her, dressed at top speed before leaving the cottage in a run. They tore down the streets, heading for the Abbey; Annette leading the way, Mélanie close behind her, with Richter, Tera and Mizrak at the rear. As they ran, Mélanie cursed herself in her head. She hadn't been careful enough, the vampires had figured out Maria's connection to the Abbot, and, as she had predicted, were taking full advantage of it. She was also a bit angry at Maria. She had warned her, why did she go to the Abbey alone? And without telling anyone she was there? Had she hoped to talk some sense into her estranged father? She was also thankful Mizrak had the sense to realise the Abbot had gone too far, and had gone to warn them. He could have done it sooner, though...
Mélanie had been so busy running, she hadn't noticed how the streets were slowly becoming entombed in shadows. The sky was darkening until it was inky black, even though it was still the height of the morning.

Annette skidded to a halt, looking up at the sky above the bell tower of the Abbey. The others stopped as well, panting for breath. Where the sun had once been, was now a giant black orb with white, burning light around its edges.
"What the fuck has happened to the sun?" asked Richter.
"It's an eclipse," said Tera. "It's just the moon. It happens."
"No. It's magic. It's Erzsebet," griped Annette.
"Yes. 'The Devourer of Light who will eat the sun,'" Richter recalled darkly. "She summons an eclipse, plunges the world into darkness, and gives her vampires external night. Ugh. Shit."
"While the Forgemaster, Abbot, makes an army of night creatures," Annette added.

Then, several heavy footsteps were making their way through the street, advancing in their direction. Mizrak grimaced, clenching his fists so hard they were shaking. It was the rest of Abbot's knights.
"But one problem at a time," said Mélanie, taking a deep breath to refocus herself on the task at hand. "First, you blast his machine right back to hell while the rest of us rescue Maria."
The other knights spilled out of the streets, standing in a straight line formation, their teardrop-shaped shields blocking their path. Tera formed an ice spear in her hands, determined to save her daughter as soon as possible.
"Stand aside," Mizrak barked at his men, stepping forwards. "You're doing the devil's work. Put down your swords and pray with me. Pray to God for forgiveness. We can end this madness."
The other knights glares didn't falter, refusing to give an inch, despite their commander's pleas. One of them drew his sword and pointed at Mizrak, whose normally stern gaze faltered a brief second. He had no choice but to fight the men who had been his brothers-in-arms for years. His eyes quickly regained their usual vigour and he drew his kilij sword in kind. Following suit, Mélanie flicked her wrist, slotting four stilettos between her fingers. Annette formed her blades from the cobblestones and Richter summoned a ball of blue flames in has palm.
"Don't burn the place to the ground," joked Annette.
"Good point. And try not to reduce it to rubble," Richter joked back.

It didn't take them long, within less than a minute, all of the knights were either dead or dying in pools of their own blood by the time they'd reached the front gates of the Abbey. Richter and Tera raced ahead, shattering the wooden doors to splinters and rushing at the night creatures that were sent to block their path. Mélanie threw knives and stilettos, aiming in between the eyes as more night creatures spilled out of a concealed door in the wall, Annette and Mizrak aiding her as Tera and Richter started battling their way towards the Abbot. He was standing over a fettered and gagged Maria who he'd laid out on the alter, chanting quotes from the Tale of Abraham like a madman.
"'And Abraham took the wood of the burnt offering, and he took the fire in his hand, and a knife'," he quoted, raising a dagger over Maria, the girl's eyes wide with terror as she desperately struggled to free herself. The Abbot's hands shook uncontrollably, hesitant to take the plunge into his daughter's chest.
"'And Issac said, "My father." And he said, "Here am I, my son."'"
As she watched Tera make a dash towards her daughter, only to be blocked by a tall night creature, Mélanie leapt off the shoulder of the one she was tussling with, launching her curved dagger into the back of its head. She scoffed in disgust as her hands got covered in blood and brain matter as she yanked it out; taking half a second to wipe them against her robes.
