Chapter 12 - Aman!!

Next Day

In the court, everyone was getting ready for the final day of court proceedings on Kamini Kapoor's case. The judge was going to announce the final verdict and decide the conviction. But many people, including Kamini and some police men already knew the result. So, Kamini was actually very happy, that finally she was going to get out of jail today.

Since Avni was the prime witness and filer of the case, she was also present in the court, but not at all happy. She was sitting in the corner of the last row, with a very dull facial expression.

She was all alone, with noone to speak to. At first she had thought that atleast Neil would come to give her company. But she was only responsible for her fate, as Neil had not talked to her even once since last day. The last word she had heard from him was that "No".

After that, she had chased him to downstairs, but he had left the home before she came down, and did not return till late evening, as Avni was waiting to talk to him. After 8 pm, she got frustrated and left. She had sent him 30 messages, did 15 calls and sent unlimited WhatsApp texts including multiple sorry's, but did not get a single revert from Neil. He had read the first few of the messages, but after that, he had stopped coming online.

She was thinking about all these when the guard's announcement grabbed her attention.

G - "Everyone please stand up. The judge is coming".

Everyone including Avni stood up to show respected to the honourable Justice.

J - "Let the proceedings begin!"

Kamini Lawyer - "Sir, the police had not been able to submit a single proof against my client till last hearing. Do they have anything new to say today?"

J - "Yes inspector, do you have anything to say?"

I - "Sir, my boss will come and give his statement today. So its my request, please wait for a few minutes"

J - "You mean your new boss?"

I - "Yes sir"

J - "And why is he late? Didn't you inform him the correct time?"

I - "Ssiirrr.. I did... Sorry sir, I will call him"

J - "Yes please do and ask him to come immediately. I am not sitting here to wait for him"

While all this was going on, Neil's words rang in Avni's ears. A new ACP had come and apparently, he is handling this case. And it seems, he is quite irresponsible.

Suddenly the courtroom door budged open and a very young IPS officer came running in, he was running so fast that his face got covered with his cap. So it was not visible. But his demeanour seemed very familiar to Avni.

The judge was not at all happy with his behaviour and so he warned him to behave himself.

On judge's warning, he stood firm in his place and fixed his cap to reveal his face, which gave a 440 volt shock to Avni.

Standing right in front of her in IPS uniform was Aman!!! Avni rubbed her eyes, pinched herself and checked thrice, but even then she could see Aman only. But she still could not believe.

She was happy that he became an IPS officer, but she was not at all happy with the things that he did while wearing this uniform - the same uniform which her husband respected so dearly.

And what he told next in his statement shocked her even more. When the judge asked him to say what he wants to say, he said:

A - "Sir, I have investigated this case in detail, and found that Mrs Kamini Kapoor is not at all guilty. Infact, someone tried to play with her dignity."

J - "Who is this someone?"

A - "Ummm... The same person who filed this case"

J - "And what's her name?"

A - "Ummm... Sorry sir I forgot"

J - "You forgot or you don't know? Which one?"

A - (silence with head down)

J - "Answer me"

A - "Sorry sir"

J - "What do you think Mr. Mehta? Am I a fool? Only three days have past since you took charge of this case. How could you complete the investigation? Arre investigation to door ki baat, apne to case file tak nahi pari abhi tak, warna aapko filer ka name pata hota"

A - "Sorry sir"

J - "Ainda mere court me aisi harkat karne se pahale do baar soch lijiega."

A - "Sorry sir"

J - "I order that this case should be transferred to a more senior officer with a proven track record of criminal investigation"

Inspector - "Sure sir, I will pass the order to commissioner sir"

J - "Yes please do. I will not pronounce the verdict today. Let's meet next month, on the same date. The court is adjourned for today."

The judge left the room and everyone sitting in the room also started leaving one by one.

After 15 minutes, the entire room became empty except just one seat. Avni was still sitting there, lost in her thoughts, eyes filled with tears. She could not believe that her Aman took bribe from Kamini. Not only this, he even came late to the court and disrespected the judge. One thing she could understand very clearly, Aman doesn't deserve to be an IPS officer.

She was on the verge of breakdown, when she felt a gentle pat on her shoulder. She looked up to find Neil, standing there, with food in his hand.

He came to sit beside Avni, hugging her from side, as Avni could not hold herself anymore and started crying loudly, keeping her head over his shoulders.

After sometime, Avni stabilized herself and said

A - "You knew it right?"

N - "Yes"

A - "And that is why you didn't talk to me yesterday"

N - "I had gone somewhere yesterday where I bumped upon him accidentally. I also came to know yesterday only, but I did not reveal it to you as I wanted you to stay strong till the hearing ended"

A - "Where had you gone? And how did you meet him?"

N - "I will tell you everything in detail, but first you need to eat"

Neil opened the lunch box which had poha and a spoon in it. He fed Avni with his own hands as she was constantly crying.

After she completed eating, Neil wiped her lips with tissue and said

N - "Waise in sab me ek cheez to accha hua"

A - "Kya?"

N - "Kamini ab kam se kam ek maheene jail me rahegi"

A - "Haan, and tumhe pata hai? Ab ye case Aman investigate nahi karega. Koi senior officer investigate karenge jinhe commissioner sir appoint karenge".

Neil just smiled brightly hearing this but did not say anything. Avni ignore it and started leaving the hall.

She had almost gone to the door when she realised that Neil is not coming with her. So she turned back to call Neil, but got surprised at what she saw!!

That same inspector was now reporting to.........

NEIL!!!!

So it's a double update today! With one revelation about Aman, and two surprises about Aman's nature and Neil's return to police force as senior officer.
